Just when it looks like AOL has got their $hit together - back to the same old AOL.

Verizon does not know when DSL will be in the area and I do not care to do business with Comcast.

AOL is a voluntarily installed virus:D

Earthlink works pretty good if you don't install any of their software (not required for connection)

As for Comcast, I don't know why you don't like them (Most people hate the cable company for charging too much), but I would still recomend cable over regular dialup.

Don't hold your breath waiting for DSL to arrive in your area, the technology for DSL isn't going to be improved for quite a while and when it finally is, it will be a totally different animal that will be able to reach out alot farther than it does (actually reach the average home and not just a select few) and will also be alot faster than it is now. Besides, who actually likes their local phone company?

Recommend me a new ISP.

virtually ANYONE but AOL!

And oh my farging gawd, if you think the PROGRAM is a virus, just wait till you call them and tell them you want to cancel... (and I pity anyone who is paying for Talk.com)

Instead of some "national" ISP, look up someone local. I've used a local ISP for nearly 4 years, the only problem I've ever had at all, is they were bought out once, and their name changed...But I NEVER get knocked off line, I NEVER get a busy signal, no crap at all. I start Outlook Express, it dials up, gets me online and grabs my e-mail. When I want to surf, I just click the "e" on my toolbar. I have NO use for the 27 zillion links, pictures & other assorted crap on the AOL 'front page', all I need is a blank browser window!

Thanks!

I have heard some good things about NetZero

?

It was about the time AOL9.0 came out that the problems started.

After a monthe of getting kicked off and doing all their fixes a Tech finally admitted that when to many sing on, somebody gets kicked off:rolleyes:

I'm not sure what part of Maryland you're in, but I'm a former Marylander (hope to return soon). I've heard not so many good things about reliability of Comcast. A lot of downtime according to my uncle who lives in Catonsville and a friend of mine that lives in Columbia.

As for Verizon, that is what I had when I left.. I was very pleased with Verizon. Hardly any down time. Pretty fast, I think it may be a little faster then my DSL here. But I'm also on a slow as computer that is about to be replaced. (DSL literally outruns my laptop. :() I also liked the fact that I had a free dial-up number for when I was elsewhere in the country and wanted my laptop to dial up. Many hi-speed companies offer that at the national level.

I also used to have a dial-up service that was local and was discounted for educators. As someone mentioned, the local companies actually do pretty well if you're looking for dial-up. But once going to hi-speed, it's hard to go back!

Good luck.

I prefer to just use IE explorer and a local hometown service. Best price and better service from my experience. HATE  AOL, not a big fan of any ISP with their own software actualy.....

I travel all over the country and was using AOL for my e-mail until I got a bill from them when I was in Texas. Apparently they don't have service there so instead of telling you that they just piggy back on another ISP and send you a service charge. I got billed over 50.00 for one month. I looked aroung on the internet and found some isp's which offer nationwide service and signed up with copper.net. $ 1.00 the first two months and $9.95 per month after. No software to install and you just call and tell them where you are for an access number. It's a dial up but on the road you take what you can get. No drop outs either.

MSN has a special now with DSL and ISP for $30 a month for the first year. Your local phone company installs the DSL line if its available in your area, you get a couple MSN mail accounts too.

My neighbor has it, I'm not sure what to tell you as far as whom to contact for a hookup....

HTH

:)
