Hey guys, I've had my 87 GN for a few months now and just noticed this last night. Supposably the car has an Art Carr tranny with an Art Carr 3000 non-lockup converter (no reason not to trust the guy, everything else he told me about the car was spot on). It also has an aftermarket tranny cooler. I'm not sure which model Art Carr it is, but supposably it should only be a year or so old with about 3000 miles.

I always noticed that on the 2-3 shift that it was very soft and would kind of "flare", this is with normal driving to moderate acceleration. Although, the 1-2 shift and 3-OD shift are ROCK SOLID, VERY FIRM and direct, no slipping whatsoever, very crisp and hard.

For some reason I was thinking I had tested it out and it shifted firm and hard on the 2-3 shift at WOT....but last night I was doing a little street testing and noticed that it flares up pretty bad on the 2-3 shift at WOT as well. It feels almost like it's out of gear for a second and then shifts, albeit not that hard. The car has a PTE44 and is making 16psi with ported heads, etc to give you an idea of the power. I know I've seen a few posts here saying that flare is pretty common with these cars but it worries me that I'm going to burn something up.

Now am I going to have to rebuild the whole tranny? Or is this something that I can go in and fix as one part/few parts? Thanks guys.

I say rebuild it.

I had a similar flare at the 2-3 shift, and I ended up going with a high end build from Jimmys Transmissions. He tried to just repair the 2-3 flare but he said the car was making too much power, and the result was a full kill build. Its worth taking it out just to know exactly whats been done. Im guessing ur car should go 11.50s well tuned, so U are real close to the border line of having to dual feed, and install a billet forward drum, and all that hi-tech trans stuff. Just make sure U go to a builder that is recommended on this board.

Any idea of cost? I doubt any builders on this board are anywhere close to me (middle Tennessee)

I've got the same trans/conv set up as you. My 2-3 shift only slips if I've got the shifter in OD. If I have it in D, it's solid.

Is that at WOT and regular driving or just WOT?

I have the same trans with the stock d5...

Mine flares all shifts, I hate it. I need to take it back and have them "fix" it.
moderate, light, hard acceleration it varies with will do it in all...

You might want to talk to Brian Hofer about a trans for you. He's got a exellent product for a very affordable price and he normally don't need a core! He will ship it right to you also. Look in the parts for sale section for a tranny for sale under "brian"... I have one with a trans brake and love it!!!

Customer Appreciation/special 2004R trans

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just wanted to take a moment and thank all of you who have helped make 2006 a great year! This trans will be 2004R #40 for the year! It has been my pleasure speaking with all of you, as well as sharing emails and stories, and I look forward to meeting more of the great people in the Buick community in the coming year.
THANK YOU for all your support. And THANK YOU TurboBuick.com.

So, I would like to offer this trans up for the price of $1350 shipped, in the U.S. This price includes the core as well. Normal price is $1650 shipped.

Monte SS CZ (model) trans has all my usual parts. Bigger boost valves, pump ring kit, Alto direct clutches (extra throughout) and wide Red band with our shift calibration.(shift kit)
This unit is a lock up with a 694 servo, and transbrake. The input shaft and drum are hardened. This trans will have nice quick shifts at part throttle and firm (not harsh) at WOT.
Biggest difference between this and the BRF is a later WOT upshift, 5250 vs 5500, and a slightly earlier third gear while cruising. (most people never notice) With correct wiring for a GN, with the correct black plug.
This unit is set up to run into the low 11`s, to high 10`s.

Also, this trans is built to be used with any higher stall converter. Restalled stocker would be fine. Perfect for a daily driver.
You can also search the trans forum for info on the CZ valvebodies.

You can view feedback in that forum on this board.
Search under brian, or Brian Hofer
Thank you, Brian

Well I went and did a WOT pull in drive, seemed like it shifted much harder than in OD.

I would say under 2K, it also depends who u go to--I know people talk about Lenny Diers in Ohio. Extreme automatics. I went local with Jimmies and am very happy.

Reading your thread makes me cringe as i had the EXACT symptoms you did, down to the T. My end result was i grenaded the trans once i put some power to it. I now only have reverse, 1 and 2 i think. I have also spoken to brian. I have also spoken to len freeman and lonnie diers prior. They are super guys and would have no regrets buying from them.
