Car had been running great! Last night on the way home, I stopped the car, spooled it up. Car ran strong until 2nd gear change. At this time it backfired once but it was bad. Car died and roll to a stop. Restarted the car, it seem to drive home ok. I never got in it again. What do you guys think might have caused this, maf, v. spings, timing, etc? Thanks.

Maybe it was detonating and the timing got yanked back so far by the computer it caused it to backfire..

Just a Thought

Do you have a heated 02 sensor?

I chased a problem just like you discribed for 5 months before I finally reallized that my 02 sensor was bad.

Heated 02 sensors tend to go bad without notice. I would get no MAL codes from any scanner and It just drove me crazy. I changed coil pack, MAF, I even changed the Cam!

I know you might be a little scared to, but get on it again to see if it will do it again. It could have just been a "one time" thing but you need to get on it to see if it will do it again.

No , o2 is not heated, but it it is a new delco o2. Could a backfire such as this blow out a head gasket? However I do not think I was getting knock at the time, car was pulling very stong. When car died I lost all scanmaster readings, so to be honest I'm unsure it I had knock or not. Thanks.

ONly a FOOL would get on it WITHOUT a scan tool of some sort!!!

Sorry, disregard My last post, I see you HAVE a scanmaster!! My appologies!

Backfires out the intake CAN blow head gaskets. However I averaged a backfire or two a day (I'm not proud of that) for 5 months and didn't blow a gasket. (thank God)

Hmmm... If you lose power, then It could be a sign of a bad negative somewhere. Check all your grounds. Do you have an engine tie down strap of some sort?

I don't think a 23K mile MAF would go bad.

I had a problem anytime the engine would torque over from the shift the p/s header would touch the + battery cable to the starter. The car would pop and try to cut out. Check for a burn mark on that cable and move it out of the way. Took me a week of swapping parts to figure that one out.

Battery cable seems to be ok as far down as I can reach. It still has all factory wire loom around it. I'm going to take it out tomorrow and roll in it kinda slow and see what happens.
