Just started cleaning the car up after sleeping for 5 months. The front wheels are filthy and stained. I have a polish that I've been using, but it doesn't seem tough enough to cut it. What do you recommend? I may even look into just buying a couple nice ones, but if I can clean these up pretty well, that'll do for now

0000 steel wool...dipped in wax.....or NeverDull.....get that at Advance Auto.....0000 steel wool at Home Depot or Lowe's.........SOS can scratch the chrome.........trust me.

Try aluminum foil and water. Cut small pieces of foil, add water start rubbing. Works good on rusted areas.

Bruce, the steel wool worked great. Think it'll be OK on aluminum also, such as RJC pulleys? Sitting all winter made them a bit tarnished. I've tried just a regular polish on them and while it shined them up a bit, there are stubborn spots

ABSOLUTLEY NOT!!!! Do not use steel wool on aluminum! That's a big NO NO! Use the "NeverDull" on the pulleys, just keep rubbing the stubborn spots with it and you'll get rid of the spots....the stuff turns black as you rub it against the aluminum.....just keep at it with "NeverDull" and you'll get it up to shiny again......steel wool will SRATCH the hell out of shiny aluminum.....if you use steel wool on aluminum, it'll give you the BRUSHED finished look.

NeverDull comes in a blue and silver can, and has cotton impregnated with special aluminum polish. Good for gold, silver, aluminum, copper, etc. I can almost guarantee you that you'll be happy with this stuff......get it at Advance Auto, NAPA, or Auto Zone and I think even Wal-Mart sells it.....

Another way to polish up chrome is BonAmi powder. The can has a picture of a baby chicken on it and says "Hasn't scratched yet." I've used that stuff on chrome for years.

Hope I've helped you.

Don't forget to start the cleaning process with the right chemicals... Take a look at Sonax full effect or Iron X. And even some browsing on Autopia.org to get up to speed on the latest! You can learn a literal ton of info about detailing and cleaning!!

I'll check out those products. I belong to Autopia already. Great site

For Chrome use Eagle 1 chrome cleaner (there's a few styles- make sure it's for chrome.) Also make sure you wear gloves, a mask and maybe goggles. That stuff is VERY strong but it cleans chrome like a champ. I've also used "000" or "0000" steel wool to get out stubborn spots- Chrome only.

For polishing by hand I use Master Polish Metal Gloss- bought it at a Good guys Show. Guy was polishing the bottoms of soda cans to a high gloss. I had to have it! (Also, if you can find it, Weenol - I think Summit may sell it.- Once saw a guy polish a scrap piece of sheet metal to a high shine with that stuff.)

Good luck

I love Wenol! That's one of my favorite polishes for aluminum. Unfortunately, I just ran out. I'll have to order some more. I'll check out the Eagle 1 cleaner also

Like Bruce said. Another all purpose polish I like is 'Speedy All Metal Polish'. Kirban may still sell it.
