My engine "coolant" temps have dropped close to 20 degrees since switching to a B&M external oil cooler . My engine use to run at a steady 168 degrees. varying a little with temp changes for the season (160 stat) . IT now runs at 148-158 since adding the cooler . I did not think by adding a external oil cooler it would effect the coolant temps that much for the better . Anybody else notice this much of a change when going to a external oil cooler ? Thanks.

I saw about ten degrees at hotter temps.

It may depend upon the converter you run, etc. Aren't you running a thermostat?

I'm running a 160 stat with a 1/8" hole drilled on the outside ring . That's what my SM is showing with all new GM sensors . I have my fan bypassed the balast and wired hi speed .

What did you do to the the ballest, I have a switch that controls the hi speed fan, I would like to get info on how to hot wire the fan for more output

I totally eliminated the ballast and only have one speed - HI . I just removed the balast and sodered a "jumper wire" in it's place .

Im gonna be doing this over the winter. I already have an external trans cooler and wil be adding an external engine oil cooler as well.. How did yu do it? What fittings to connect the cooler lines to the cooler? etc etc//Details please!!

I mounted a B&M cooler just behind the PS air dam and drilled 3 x 1 3/4" holes in the PS dam in front of the cooler (looks real trick-wish I had a camera) . I took the oil filter adapter and oil cooler to a local Hyd Hose shop and got all the correct fittings . I then installed everything , took measurements of the length of the 2 hoses needed . went back to the Hyd shop with measurments in hand and got the hoses made up . Total cost for hoses and fittings was about $70 (CDN) .

$70 CDN, that means I should be able to do it for $20 US.

seriously it made a noticeable difference, that's great, that may be one of my next mods.

It should cost you no more then $2 US :D . Remember when measuring the hoses , make them a little longer for any engine or body movement . depending where you mount the oil cooler . I'll see if I can get hold of a camera , I'll email you a couple pics .

KOOLER

kwikr 1 .... is there room to fit a snow deflector on your o-cooler ..... gotta have one of them.

I've fitted my trans cooler to pass side bumper shock at the end of the frame ... and run braided hoses from trans to 4 pass cooler.
I guess I gotta drill the holes also in a/dam.

Havent run mine yet.. but hope I get the 20*(farenht degrees ??) as you.

Yeah, was that improvement in f or c?,
Do you guys race a 1/4 KM?
Are your trap speeds in MPH? or KM?

What is american sauce?
What is pootin (sic)?

I am just teasin' a bit, but I would like to know.

Pooteen

?Pooteen? is a French Canadian food that is GUARANTEED to put yer cholestrol OFF THE MAP..... its a melted cheese and salty gravy goop that is poured over (greasy) french fries.

Love it ... nuthin like it..... makes the heart stop ..... gotta cleanse it outa the system with Sambucca.

American Sauce ....... hummm cud be sumthin to do with JayLo ??

Can any of you guys tell me where you got your coolers and the diameter of the openings. Are the openings as large as the stock cooler openings in the radiator? I am thinking of getting one.

I used a B&M cooler #70265 . 16,000 lbs GVW , and it is a nice size that fits in the area of the PS dam 11" x 4 1/2" x 1 1/4" . Summit has them for $45.95 US.

Dave, I also used the same bolt hole to mount one side of the cooler with a straight bracket . Other side has a L shape break that is bolted to the frame just under the battery .The bottom of the cooler sits about almost flush with the bottom of the dam . I use a fine tooth hole saw to cut the holes in the dam . Be sure to put masking tape on the plastic dam before you hole saw it . It allows for a cleaner cut by the hole saw :) . You can also epoxy 1/8"-1/4" mesh behind the holes in the dam if your worried about anything that might hit the cooler .

No room for a "snow defector" :D . car only gets driven in the summer . I also have another external cooler for the trans that sits behind the grill .

Thanks for the info guys. Im gonna mount my engine oil cooler next to my trans cooler in front of the radiator. I was wondering what kind of fitting to use to go from my cooler lines to the new cooler lines on the external cooler. Maybe Ill get complete hoses from the adaptor to the cooler.. hmmm

About using rubber hoes on coolers . The hose and fittings I got from a hyd shop are rated something like 2000-3000 psi . I wouldn't be to concerned about those splitting :) .

In order for any type of engine or trans cooler to be efficient, it must be mounted in the air stream like the radiator and a/c condensor. It must also have a clear path for air to flow out the back side. Adding a fan will not help the situation. Mounting them in front of the radiator is fine as long as they are not touching each other. There is no adverse effects to having both mounted in front of the radiator. Ask the Arizona guys. Heck, you would put a front mount intercooler in front of the radiator.
