Well, as the title says so it goes. Found out that my fans were not operating and got a large puff of smoke through the ac vents that smelled like rubber. I checked the coolant and there is hardly any in there. I've never had this happen and wanted to know what a head gasket job would run or what's involved.

overheated is a little more involved than just the headgaskets

are you sure the gasket popped , do you have a milkshake in the oilpan?

I haven't checked the oil in the pan yet. If it did overheat and didn't blow a gasket what all is involved?

I have over heated a couple of times. The only thing I had to do was fix the over heating problem. One time it was the heater core. Replaced, flushed and filled the system. This year it was the radiator. Replaced and good to go. Sounds like a fan fix and fill er up and you should be good to go.

first step would be to determine if you did blow a headgasket as that was the title of your opening thread

if you lost coolant the question is where did it go, did you have a temp gauge or a read temp # off the scanmaster ?
if its in the oil pan mixed with the oil and it did overheat it could be the head gaskets and plan on a full teardown and inspection of the heads and dropping of the pan to clean everything and look at the bearings

test the rad with a coolant pressure tester , if it doesnt hold pull the plugs and see if it changes
with plugs out look for signs of coolant on plugs , disconnect the ignition module connector and prop the throttle open , spin the motor with plugs out and see if any liquid blows out ,
then do a compression test

if compression looks good and even and the coolant pressure test is good then you can add water to rad and fix the fan issue ,looking in the radiator if the coolant doesnt start to flow at the temp of the thermostat then replace the thermostat

I checked the oil on the stick and it appears fine with no milkshake look. I have not dropped the pan. I'll have to take it to my mechanic to find out for sure.
