Left at a green light last weekend, got up to 5-10# boost and there was a loud BOOM! followed by the car losing all power. Car had to be towed back home. There is rapid clicking noise coming from the torque converter area which is much more pronounced (louder) once I removed the inspection cover and started the car. The converter is still bolted to the flexplate and the flexplate does not have any wobble or play in it. Car has NO go at all. I can move the gear selector throughout the entire range and nothing happens. It's as if the car is in neutral. Also, I want to note that the clicking sound gets quiteras the gear selector is moved down to the Drive position and the sound completely disappears in the #2 an #1 gear positions. Car does lock and holds stationary in the Park position. Also, I verified the pump is working. In addition, the fluid is now a purple color and has a very fine glitter appearance to it. Car was giving absolutely no signs of trouble before this catastrophic failure.
Had transmission rebuilt and beefed up 8k miles ago by a reputable shop. I know what I'm in for repair-wise, but I'm just curious as to what may have given way. The parts that were beefed up in the rebuild were: hardened forward clutch drum, heat-treated stator support, heat treated sun gear shell, intermediate servo, billet band anchor and rollerized low/reverse clutch housing, alto wide red lined racing band with welded anchors, 7 friction direct clutch pack, billet aluminum direct clutch apply ring, high output pump with increased line and lube pressures, performance steel line boost valve, and shift kit.
I DID reuse my red stripe converter after the first rebuild since it seemed to be okay.
