We came home to this one day. He was healthy and almost 5ft long. I didn't know if he had any diseases so I grabbed my gloves. Took him down the arroyo and let him go out in the desert away from the dogs.

Except for the Coral Snake all your poisonous snakes are going to have a pit viper head shaped like this.

The wife walked out on this snake on our porch before, and I thought there was a murderer outside from her scream.

There are 4 venomous snakes native to North America. Pit vipers and coral snakes. Hognose snakes and a few water snakes can have a diamond shapped head as well and are not poisonous.

The scarlet milk snake looks like the Coral snake and fools many so stay away. Coral snakes are related to Cobras I believe.

There are no definite rules when it comes to identifying poisonous snakes. Some have pits and some don't. Some have large heads, others don't.

So that means kill on site:biggrin:

Haven't you guys with mice problems ever heard of ***** cats;) I got 30+ running around my farm. No mice, hardly any snakes (had a big one last week and can't find him:eek::mad:) no lizards, or anything... I have Martin houses for the bugs so I have that covered too! Feed them just enough to keep them around and they will kill some stuff! They tend to over populate from time to time so we have to take care of that which sucks...

A .22 w/ a scope takes care of the feral cats around here....Last count, my bud got 13 in 2 days. Dumb cats... Keep coming back to the dog's food bowl!

"Red to yellow, kill a fellow; red to black, venom lack!"

There are a couple of banded snakes in the U.S. that can be mistaken for a coral snake!! We have a Californian Mountain King that looks like a coral snake.

The coral snake and the cobra are both members of the "elapids" and they both have a potent neurotoxin. Coral snakes are very docile and small, to get bit by one you have to be very unlucky or very stupid!

True. The King snake can also rememble the Coral snake.

Thats where this little rhyme came from..............

"Red to yellow, kill a fellow; red to black, venom lack!"

I cant believe a good ol boy like Sgrim is afraid of snakes.............

Whats the deal with these snakes man!

Sure am... I will kill one and have been very close to them:eek: But when people pick them up and touch them I want to hurl... Snakes are killers plain and simple they exist for no other reason...

Snakes make great pets and they keep burglers out of your house!!!

I've raised Red Tail boas, Columbian Rainbow boas and have been around snakes since I was a little kid!! They arent the monsters/killers that some people make them out to be!! Rattlesnakes make good chili......

I remember when my son was about 8-9 and he played soccer with Andy Benes kid. Andy was a pitcher for the padres and stood 6'7". My son walked up to him with his rosey boa which was only 2 foot long. Andy was sitting in a folding chair at the soccer game and when he saw the snake, he jumped out of the chair and took off running!! One of the funniest things I have ever seen..............:biggrin:

Why am I not surprised that you like to play with snakes

Maybe you can tell us this snakes evolutionary history and why it means Jesus isn't the saviour :D;)

Believe it or not, I'm a good ol california country boy.......................

Save your religious bias for the political forum.....................:biggrin:

I would pay money to witness that.

From a safe distance, of course.
Well I tried, was planning to leave his head for last and grab him behind the head...but he was too stuck so he got the hammer treatment...

Wife woke me up this morning screaming, there was a dam water snake about 5 foot long curled up at the bottom of the back porch, before I could wake up and get a shovel he took off to the lake...told her to let the dog play with it.... our 2 other dogs used to catch snakes all the time and then play tug of war with them until they were beat up enough to just lay there giving me time to get a shovel and kill it.

venomus snakes are easy to id. Copper head, cottonmouth and rattle snakes all have a "pit" located between the eye and nose(senses heat). And yes you have to get pretty close to see it.,:eek:The coral snake has no such pit, teeth are non retractable/small and you really don't have to worry about being bit unless you are handling it. Water snakes can look really similar water moccusins(sp) minus the pit of course. I don't handle any type of water snakes because sometimes its a little hard to tell the difference.:o
Just leave em alone:)

Three stories for you guys. My bud Scott's brother is a herbatologist for the Fort Worth Zoo. Before that he was a student at TCU and kept all kinds of reptiles at the house. One was a pygmy rattler. I met the little bastard when I went over to Scotts one day. It actually kept me from getting bit from 2 on a church retreat.
There is a Presbyterian retreat that we would go to and there is a lit cross at the top. 3 of us decided to climb to the top at sunset to watch the sun go down. Stupidly we didn't take flashlights with us. We were trying to get down when the guy in front stopped when he heard a ratling sound. He turned to his other side and a second rattling sound happened. 2 of us were running to the light of the cross and he turned around to ask what the noise was. Getting off that cliff was not fun in the dark but we made it finally. Not a fun evening for sure.

Another time was as I was going up the stairs to my apartment. I made it up the first landing and my foot froze as I was about to start to the top. a copperhead about 4 feet long was coming down toward me. I SCREAMED at Jimmy to get a gun. He was like "What?". I told him to get a f_cking shotgun and he ran. When he got back out and shot the head off the little b!tch he was like "So what's the problem?" I HATE snakes!

The next time was at my old shop. My EX-(SORRY SOB) partners dog was barking and we went out to find what she was fussing about. It turned out to be a baby ratler. Mike is deathly afraid of snakes btw. I cut it's head off and when I tried to take it into the shop so I could get a better look at it he pulled his .45 on me and said "get the hell out". No jokes.

Mike did exactly what I would do;) I had to threaten violence before as my guy here plays with snakes like some do with dogs. Dead or alive I have told him, touch me with one and you will join the snake:cool:
