cam and timing chain question

im considering getting the edlebrock 204-214 cam kit. it says to get edelbrock timing chain kit PN 7818 but on their site that part number is actully the timing set for an AMC. the Buick timing chain set is PN 7829. anyone ever see this before? also do our cars have the integral distributor drive? and has anyone used edelbrocks double roller timing cain set before. while i replace the cam i might as well throw in a nice new set of gears and a chain. from what they have listed on their site the chain seems pretty good. here is what they say about them

Performer-Link True-Rolling Timing Chain and Gear sets are for use with Edelbrock or stock cams. They have a solid-bushing chain for a true bearing surface that rolls with the sprockets, eliminating chain stretch. Crank gears are machined from SAE-1144 stressproof steel. Three Performer-Link sets are stock replacement parts and 50-state street legal (see listings in bold type). All other sets have three keyway setting points to ensure accurate timing selection for early or late-model vehicles. Performer-Link timing sets are not for use above 6500 rpm.

also, is a new cam button required with a double roller set b/c i still got the stock button in there? will it come with the double roller set if i buy it as a kit from edelbrock?

I would go with the chain and gear set that is recommended for the cam. You will not get a new cam button with it. I personally went with a needle bearing button to reduce wear on the front cover. When you break it down you will probably see an uneven surface where the stock cam button wore the front cover. Get this machined flat and install the needle bearing cam button. Just my opinion.

I used a heavy duty non-roller type chain/gears with my Edelbrock 204-214 cam. It was either a Speed Pro or FelPro(I forget) unit, and does not use/need the tensioner(the chain was "tight" on both sides.) Don't use the tensioner with a roller chain. You have to buy the Cam button seperately, and you definitely should.

One more variable for you to consider... I installed the 208/208 cam with GM lifters to attain a quiet valvetrain and ZERO ramp noise successfully. I used a Cloyes, Non Roller timing set, with a new GM tensioner and roller cam bearing. Break it in right with 30W oil, change it to 10W30 and forget about it. Runs dead quiet and screams.
Just my opinion.

does it matter what lifters you use? intercooler told me some people have had noise problems from comp cams kits. what is ramp noise anyways? does it set off the knock sensor?

warp speed, how do you like you 204-214 edelbrock cam? how many miles on it so far? my edelbrock catalog says that cam isnt for computer controlled cars but i see many are using it. why do they say this if it works?

jimn8or- why do you use 30W oil to break it in? is it b/c it leaves more oil film on the bearings and lobes? wil GM lifters work w/the edelbrock cam? do the edelbrock lifters cause noise?

Don't sweat! Install the cam with the lifters and assembly lube you got with it if you bought the kit. Paint all the lobes! Comp Cams lifters are noisey and part of it is the fast ramp rate Comp uses in thier cams. My 218 made a bunch-o noise! My friend Charlie that I am helping with the motor bought the suggested Edelbrock chain to use with his and a Dynagear cam button from AutoZone. No tensioner!! You will be fine! Get it in and going!

I like it fine,, if I had to do it again, I would use the same cam and lifters(the ones that came with the cam.)
I guess they say "not for CC cars" because it is not 4* advanced or retarded(whatever.) It works fine(passed emissions too. ) I prolly got about 30k miles on it,, I don't know for sure, but it's been a while.
I used the Edelbrock cam instead of the Speed Pro because I heard E makes their own "blanks" which means they probably researched the line-up of lifter bore to cam lobes(which we all know isn't exactly perfect in the 3.8L. ) Soooo, perhaps they improved on it, maybe. Both the E & the SP have the same specs. The motor is surprisingly quiet,,, if I ever hear a tick at all, it's unusual.

I just finished swapping a KB cam for a comp 212 212 yesterday. I talked with Jack Cotton in length before I purchased it and he assured me that most of the problems are associated with not following instructions properly. I do not know which ones in particular people are having problems with but this one is quiet as a mouse!! I used the lifters that came with it also. I used the same timing chain and gears though as they only had 5,000 miles.
I had purchased the needle bearing button from KB. It is a good piece that will save wear on the front cover.
After you choose a cam, go with the cam manufacturers suggestions as far as gear set and installation procedures.
If you want to hear a cam that has ramp noise just listen to a KB cam!!!
Cam lobe Ramp noise is reffering to the angle of the grind on the lobes that is too steep so it kind of slaps the lifters on the edge and not on the underside into rising up instead of sliding under them to raise them with out making noise. That is the best way that I can describe it.
Purchase your cam from a reputable vendor like Jack who can give you first hand knowledge of any problems associated with it and you cannot go wrong.
As I said I do not know which comp cams in particular people are having problems with but the 212 212 sure works and sounds good to me!!!

Some do and some don't. Install is pretty straight forward as long as you measure preload for correct size pushrods so I don't think that is an issue. When you got your cam from Jack did any of it come in boxes? I thought jack was using the Comp Cam and Sealed Power 969 lifters with it?

Yes it came in boxes. The lifters were in a comp cams lifter box pn#869-12. I guess 12 is how many are in the box. I like it so far.
