Hello,

Battery died and tried recharging battery while driving. During the drive my scanmaster will not power on.

After driving a good 20 minutes, I turned off the engine and tried to restart the car with no luck. Barely had juice to turn starter but weak then eventually no response to the starter.

The scanmaster however was now functioning at iginition on. Battery reads 10 Volts.

I hope it is just the battery. Question, will an unchargeable batter cause the ScanMaster to NO Power on during drive? But Power on with just ignition on?

Thanks in advance.

Tried starting the car

I would get a volt meter and make sure you have power the scanmaster first.

Also, check the light for the battery idiot light and make sure it has not burned out. I've never seen it happen but I do remember a thread about a battery not chargning because the aforementioned light was out. I guess it must be part of the circuit.

volts bulb

On my '85: I remember the idiot light bulb provided a 400 ohm resistance to the 12 volts from the fuse block. The resulting voltage was the excitor for the field. No bulb- no alternator output. I put a one-wire 200 amp on my '87. Check that bulb- it might work the same as the '85s did.

you shouldnt try and charge the battery by just driving around- the alternator is for replenishing the power that the car has used, thats why sometimes when your battery goes your alternator goes- and vice versa- they both need to be healthy for them to survive. charging a battery with an alternator just puts a big strain on the alternator :)
