With no shims I have .001 cam thrust clearance. This is tight. Is it enough? I am thinking about using some 800 grit on a piece of glass and sanding about .005 off the button. Anyone got some suggestions here?

how about machining the extra (.005") need off of the front cover ? . :) also make sure you have no other issues (eg: frost plug/cam plug in rear of engine ).

I think it would be easier to knock .005 off the button.

Definately not the cam plug. Thanks though.

Anyone else?

Are you checking this with the gasket on?
If so what brand gasket?
I know th felpro is about 2tho thicker than gm.

I knocked .005 off the cam button. And used a Corteco timing cover gasket. Which looks thinner than the Fel pro but compressed to about the sam thickness. I really like the construction of this gasket BTW. It has a thin rubber coating and does not look like it wants to squeeze out like the fel pro was doing before I was reachin the right torque.

Timing cover set: 14266

I got it at Van's. Which probably does not help, as it is a local part's chain. Call your local parts stores and see if they carry corteco. It is starting to be a more common line I think.

Just wondering......How are you checking the clearance? I’m getting ready to set my roller up, w/ Dave Weber's retaining setup/stack up. The problem I see is no way to get a dial indicator on the back of the cam while it’s setting on the engine stand. Any solutions?

Yeah, more info on how to set up the checking of thrust would be appreciated. I am getting ready to set up my 1st in the next couple of weeks. My cam plug is currently outta the block can I put it in before I install the cam?

Yes you can, this would be the best way to check. I don't like angling the dial indicator through the drain holes, this skews the reading and I can't get repeatable readings. Plastiguage will also work (red will give you a ballpark figure you need). Also note that the gasket will compress more after sitting for awhile. I would go ahead and get 2 front cover gaskets as you probably are going to destroy 1 installing and removing it. If reinstalling after making an adjustment use the used gasket as it had been compressed and wait until final assembly to use the other gasket if need be. HTH.
