Got a quick question, I am looking at a car that the current owner never registered after buying. Meaning, the title(out of state) is still in the old owners name, but signed over to the guy selling it now. It's also dated three years ago to top it off. Anyone know what kind of problems this would cause trying to register in MI now? This may be a deal breaker. Thanks
Steve

I've bought cars like this before with zero issues. The only problem was, neither person had wrote a date on the title/transfer papers. If it was me, I would check with my local tax/tilte office about it before I did anything....I would take in the VIN and plate info as well.

wouldn't work in Massachusetts  owner has to pay the sales tax and get a new title in his name

That's the problem, If the last owner wouldn't have dated the title and filled in the current owners name when he signed it over to the current owner, it would seem as though the current owner never existed.

I missed the part where the current owners name is signed also...I'm not sure that would fly even in Texas. People usualy just sign it over to you but leaves the new owner name and date blank. I'm pretty sure the current own would have to pay taxes down here in Texas as well. If you knew the original owner, I guess you could ask him to get a title copy.

My Ex Does Title Work And I Had The Same Problem Once .this Is What I Did. Apply For I Lost Title In The First Guys Name.have It Send To Your House And Sign The Guys Name On It. I Know What Your Thinking But It Cuts Through All The B S. Or The 2nd Guy Has To Fix It.pay The Taxes And The $100.00 Fine.
Trust Me I Buy A Lot Of Cars With Fu8ked Up Titles And She Tell Me How To Get Around It All The Time(that Is Why I Keep In Good With Her) Just My In Put. If You Have Any Questions Just Ask.

If the title is signed over to anyone other than a dealer (who would not have to pay tax) it needs to be put into their name. Since it has now been signed over that person needs to go the their local motor vehicle and put the title in their name. After they do so they can legally sell you the car.
