Hey guys,

I got challenged to a race today. Theres a kid at school I've seen before, drives a 86 Mustang SVO. for those not in the know, those are 2.3 liter 4-clyinder, torbo'd and IC'd. I'd seen/heard him around the campus a few times, but today was the first time I was driving the GN and we crossed paths. We got to talking, he challanged me to a race. He says his motor is the original, but was rebuilt a year or so back, with better cam/springs. He also has a frontmount, and a larger than stock turbo, as well as some computer mods to make it all run happy. He says hes never had it at the track. It seems kinda rough, and doesnt seem to run very smooth (and not in a "he's got a big cam and loose converter" kinda way, but more in a "that cars missing and needs a once over" kinda way).

Now my car, even though it has an engine bout 1.5 time as big, is pretty much stock. My mods are listed below, with the addition of a Big Mouth Cold Air Intake from BuickGN.com. I had my car on the 1/8 mile once, right after I first bought it (before any mods). This was when it barely ran, made no power above about 3000 RPM, and had some nasty vacuum leaks. It ran a best of 11.1 in the eighth, which is around a 17.xx 1/4 mile time. I know thats horrible, but the car runs a LOT better now.

So what do you guys think? I have no idea how fast these SVO cars can be. In general, I'm guessing it'd be about close... hes done more work to his car, but mines got a displacement edge. I'm probably gonna run him regardless. I'm just curious what you guys think, and what you know about these SVO cars. Thanks!!

from what i remember, those cars were about as fast as a stock hotair... mid - low 15s being the norm

if hes got a bigger turbo, cam and valvetrain work, a front mount, computer work, AND its actually running well, you could be in for some trouble. ive seen similarly modded ones run low 13s

I have a 85 SVO and stock it would run15.00. From what you said, a front mount and a cam change would be good on top end. The computer mods would also help. The was a guy on the SVOCA that ran 12.30 with nothing more than a front mount and downpipe change. SVO are FORD's version of the GN. They accept the same mods. I got mine to run 7.9-8.0s in the 1/8 with a Spearco (off my T Type) and a 3 inch exhaust... Oops, I forgot to mention I had a 87 GN turbo modded to fit the SVO. I also had a 50hp that I NEVER got to spray at the track. If the car sound ragged I would still run him. He could be a bad driver.... The only way you will know what you car can run is to run him... I have access to a 87 T Type drivetrain and I am considering putting in my SVO.... I am SURE I WILL be pissing of some SVO guys:eek:

I posted the same thread in the general tech area, and most of those guys seemed to think I don't stand much of a chance. Of course some of that is due to the typical hot-air discrimination, I'm sure. But from what I've been reading bout these SVO's, they can be made to go pretty fast. OH, and a correction, his is an 84, not an 86 as i had typo'd originally (not sure if that makes a difference)

The way I figure, I'll put a few gallons of race gas in, turn up the boost a few pounds, and hope to get him off the line (my car launches real well, I can hold as much boost on the line as I want). From there, well, its up to The Fates. If I lose, oh well, at least I had some fun. If I win, then I can brag about how I beat a modified turbo'd mustang (I'll leave out the 4-cylinder part) in my essentuially stock buick.

Thanks for all the input guys. It should go down this weekend, I'll fill you in!

Hot air descrimination? I wouldn't put a stock 87' GN up against a tuned SVO.

If you post this on enough threads, someone will give you the answer you are looking for.

Hot air descrimination?

I was reffering to comments like this:

"I had high hopes for you,,until you said the no-no word ( Hot Air) " (a reply to my threda in the gen. tech. forum)

that us hot-air guys hear all the time (hot-air discrimination is a fact of life for us... every time I go to the local GN cruise spot, I have to listen to a half dozen guys telling me to sell my car for scrap, and save up for a "real GN" in a few years, or to call them when I'm ready to play with the big boys and get an IC'd car)

And I actually posted in the hot air forum first, not to try to "get the answer I was looking for". Since I realized I'd probably get more views in the general tech, and chances are better than someone SVO knowledgeable (like yourself) would reply, I decided to post there as well. Since you replied, I guess it worked out, huh?

I have a 85 SVO and I will tell you their are not the EASIEST car to tune.... Even if you change the cam, the stock EEC and mass air will sometimes not read it... I love my 85 T Type... I have a 87 intake that will let me be HOT AIR and cooled... I like the sleeper effect of being HOT Air... But when idiots push me... I can slap a intercooler on in 30 minutes....

As far as the 84 SVO... run he and have FUN... If you lose that is fine... Make sure your tune is good... If you are running race gas, turn up the boost to about 17lbs... If you have made some mods, HOT AIRs like 20lbs with the stock turbo... Just have fun and post back. GOOD LUCK...Spank that ARSE... Naah you won't need it:) :) :) You should cover him... unless he is playing Wolf!!!!

Dude race him and have fun I raced a Viper and won (he smoked his tires bad)
On the second time around I didn’t race him but he was gone before I hit the gas.
But I still had fun and can talk sh*t about beating a big dollar viper with my POS.

If it weren't for hot airs, my car wouldn't exist.

Back to the point...have fun, no disrespect intended, I hope you do wipe him off the map.

From what I have read, his tune doesn't seem all that well thought out.

If you do beat him, make him put a GN hat into his hood scoop and drive it that way for a week. If he wins, tell him you will disconnect two spark plug wires.

Bench racing is exactly that- BENCH racing. You can have a faster car, but if you don't know how to drive it, you're toast.

Don't live on the opinions of others- go out, do the deed, and report back. Just don't be the only GN running around on 4 cylinders;)
