It's not very bad.....and only does it sometimes......but when I'm stopped and put it in reverse or drive.....I hear a "clunk" noise. I'm not too much of a grease monkey....but is that the universal joint on the driveshaft making that noise?
If so, is that something I can change myself in the driveway.
No effect on performance......it's just embarrassing when it's all quite around me (like at a car show!) and I engage the trans.....and it clunks!
TIA, Chris

could very well be the u-joints? have they ever been replaced? if not you can pull the drive shaft at the house take it to a drive shaft shop and them re u-joint it balance it and re-install. its not expensive at all and this fixed my clunk. there are other things that could cause this but i would look into the u-joints first.

.

Yes they're original. Thanks, 'cause I would have just replaced the u-joints (if I could have done it myself) and re-installed it (myself). I didn't know I would need the drive shaft re-balanced.

no problem. its best just to get it re-balanced while you have it out due to it still being orignal.

It could be u-joints, but it could also just be the clearance between the ring and pinion, the clunk would only happen some times, because the rear end wont be loaded, say if you had it in reverse and now you go to leave and go forward, it will have to fill the gap in the pinion to ring clearance, hence the clunk, i would take the drive shaft out and check the u-joints for excessive play, it is really easy to do, jack it up and take of the cap straps VIA 4 12mm bolts(i believe thats the size) pull the trans side yoke out of the tranny and check them!
