I have a lot of questions about collector insurance. I am looking to insure 2 or 3 of my cars this way. I gather that some of them are very restrictive. Such as to shows only. This won't do for me. I also gather that some have very low mileage restrictions. I drive each of these cars 4-500 miles a year. I also understand they will not allow driving to work. This is not a problem.
Does any one know if they will take my T, my TTA and my Syclone ? Do all of the vehicles have to be garaged. If this is the case I can only do 2.
Has any one ever had to do a claim ? Was the claim handled satisfactorily ? Are there any companies to avoid ? So if any one knows who can help with this it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Try Hagerty, I went to a show and someone from the company was there and he was talking about it, he said it works by you giving them the value that that you think your car is worth and want it to insure it for, and I think you pay .06 cents for every dollar it is insured. The only thing is that they only insure cars that are older then 1983, but if it is a newer car after 1983 that is a special or limited edtion they will insure it, so go to http://www.hagerty.com/ and try to find an agent near you.
Goodluck

Something to note about SOME collectors insuance companies (possibly all but not sure), youre required to have at least 1 newer than 1990 vehicle in the household per driver in your household (or just yourself), they see that as you'll have a "reliable" car or normal transportation and wont have to use one of the collectable vehicles.

As for restrictions, most allow for shows, cruises, and a sunday drive. Dont even think of going near a drag strip unless theres a show there, because if there isnt they can deny your claim (yes Ive seen it happen to a car hit while parked). Unfortunately because youre paying so little for coverage, these guys are much more apt to investigate all claims, they WILL check what you were doing and why the car was out, and if you say youre going to a show they will expect proof the show exists, stuff like that.

As for the mileage the lowest Ive seen is like 1000 miles a year, usually they are 2000-2500.

Well I tried hagerty . I ciuld only do my T type. They sais since it is worth under 20,000 dollars it does not qualify:(. Does some one else have any suggestios ?
Thanks

Haggerty is great, but the will only insure a car that is at least 20 years old. I can drive my GS anytime as long as it is cosidered pleasure. They do require you to have another car insured by a major insurance company. 15K agreed value policy costs me under $200 a year. No deductiable and flatbed towing also included.

I tried to get State Farm to do my GN on a collectors policy, they said no way. Because it was not 20 or 25 years old they could not. I insured it as a pleasure vehicle for under 7500 miles a year. My car wont see 750 miles a year. At least i can drop the collision coverage in the winter.

Must vary if in different states, my GN has been insured with Haggerty for a few years?

GN has a stated value of $18,000. They told me they would NOT insure my 9000 mile T-Type as they only do GN's in that catagory.

Maybe it depends on who answers the phone there?:)

Grundy is the best. NO mileage restrictions.. I've had em all and its the cheapest and the best..

Hagerty will insure a vehicle that has obtained collector car status but is less than 20 years old. The GN is covered if you ask them. Still, it can't be your daily driver which mine is. :( I need a DD truck. I wish the wife would let me buy a lightning :D

This is so TRUE about Hags... I called twice & got different answers about my GN.

So off to Grundy I went & am now..

I hear another is American collectors but don't know about them.

That's who I used - they're an agent for Great American. 3k miles per year limit, stated value. Must have one other car per driver, 1990 or newer. Can't drive to work. Sunday drives, shows, and tracks are okay (at your own risk while racing, though).

With grundy can it be your daily driver.

Not a chance. They DO give you unlimited mileage, but they sure as hell would question your collectable vehicle getting 14k miles put on it in a year. their unlimited mileage is within reason, basically it allows the collector to enjoy his or her car a bit more and not to have to worry about mileage.

NO but your regular insurance can. But be ready to spend a bundle of $$ for actual value & daily driving.

$700- with regular insurance last year & $240- with grundy this year.

What you can do is always BUY the 1 year policy from regular insurance & use it for 6 months. They will send you back 1/2 years payment.
So in effect when I did that my $700 was really $350.. For the extra $100 I could ride to work everyday if I wanted.

NO you have to have an everyday driver. All classic insurance companys do this. This is one of the major reasons it is so inexpensive. You classic is not gonna be sittin at the mall while you are shopping..

And if by chance your classic got nabbed at the mall... that IS grounds for them to deny your claim.

It has happened before it will happen again, Im not making this up...
