Any Advice on installing Cometic head gaskets?

In the next couple weeks I will be installing my heads and thought I would ask for some advice.

I will be using ARP studs.

I have heard issues with the Cometic gaskets leaking around the head bolts. Is their some precations for preventing this? Maybe using a thin layer of sealant around the areas prone to leak?

Would appriciate any input.

Thank Guys

it goes between the head and the block - HA!!
hey you said "any"! got to stop posting after being up all nite before it gets me in trouble.

But seriously, if it is leaking in the bolt area it is probably because no sealer was used on the threads.

There is lots of talk about re-torqueing on the boards right now, but I have always used a sealer, either Permatex teflon sealer or gasket maker, and only torqued once - never blown a head gasket or had a leak. Just do not know how solid the sealer in the head bolts can be if the sealer is disrupted after a day or more, plus heat from the engine

up late

Man, and I thought I was up late! It is 1am here in Alaska, so that make it real late their!

Hey thanks for the advice.

I would love to get up there for the experience! A truly different land - it seems anyway.

Never seen the aurora, or experienced long days and nights.

Stuck in the city :( but I can get lots of stuff within 20 minutes of my home and at all hours of the nite :)

Roll on up!

You would love it right now -45 degrees.. eeeehhaaaa, dark all the time.

Car makes good boost at that temp..but traction sucks in the snow.. yeah right!

Yep grew up seeing the Aurora, it used to scare me when I was little, did not know what it was. Mostly Green, but sometimes you will see white, red and silver on a rare occasion.

Summer, May, June, July is alway the best time to visit. 1/2 million people in a state almost 1/3 the size of the US, lots of room to yourself.

Good Track in Anchorage, Hot rodding has be alive and well for many years here.

Heres some advise- DON'T USE COMETICS!!!! Use RJC's bulletproof HG's(goop gaskets).

I have had cometic HG in my car for a while now no problems, make sure you use thread sealer on all of the head bolts and torque cycle the head stud acording to ARP I would torque them all first then losen them one at a time in order and retorque. You might get a little coolant leak for the first 10-20 miles then it should stop. I never did but they say it is possible.

Yes I have heard that RJC's are and excellent choice as well.

It was kind of a 50/50 decision on what way to go, I had considerd the RJC's. but went with the Cometics.

Maybe I should try putting RJC's on one head and Cometics on the other?
Just Kidding..... :D

Remove the two brass rivets that sit under the intake. They will pop off. Lightly coat the layers (inside layer too) with hylomar or copper spray. Use some teflon pipe dope on stud threads that go into block. Torque to 85 ft lbs. I always retorque no matter what gasket I use.
