Computer geniuses - is it this simple?

I remember working on my old 386 - dropping in a math co-processor and it seemed to speed things up a little. Can a processor in the newer machines simply be exchanged for a faster one? I have a 1.5GHz and am looking into something on the order of 2.5 - 3.0 GHz. Is it this easy or am I missing something?

Thanks.
Matt

motherboard needs to support the bigger processor. What kind of a computer is it, usually a motherboard can support several processor speeds, but you will have to adjust the jumpers.

check the manufacturer's home page there is usually some specs. on there.

With a p4 1.5, FSB of 400 Mhz, I believe you can go up to a 2.6 P4.

If it is a Socket423 Pentium4, the fastest you can go is 2.0GHz w/o an adapter (http://www.powerleap.com), if it is a Socket478 (newer style) Pentium4, you should be able to go to 2.6GHZ and indicated above.

You should call Compaq and have them tell you the max CPU supported.

What did they say?

Man, this must be what it is like to be a mustang guy and hear the Turbo Regal guy talk about mods. Right over the head.
