converter replacement with out pulling the trany?

Can the stock trans be unbolted and slid back enough on the crossmember to remove and replace the torque converter? I'm looking to do it as a one man show without a trans jack. Is it doable?

I wouldn't try it without some kind of Jack for support. The Trans is heavy, not to mention the weight of the TC.
You're gonna need 2 hands to spin & push on the TC to make sure it's installed correctly.
Should feel/hear 3-clicks, Input Shaft splines, Stator Support splines and Pump Lugs/splines.
1/8" - 3/16" between TC & Flexplate before sliding TC forward to bolt to Flexplate.

Trans Lines, TCC plug, Dipstick Tube, TV Cable @TB and Driveshaft will need to be disconnected.

Do your self a favor and get a cheap tranny jack from Harbor freight, makes the job SO much easier.

X2 on the Jack. Also it's a lot easier if you can get it up on a lift. Just did one about a month ago and it's certainly doable. Not too hard...

I recently did this with the harbor freight tranny jack. Cost $140, worth every penny, even if you only use it for this one job.

Thanks guys. I've done several trany pulls back in the day by just pulling it, laying it on my chest and rolling it off of me and re installing it by basially bench pressing it back into place with my hands and knees haha. That was 20 years ago though and I'm sure that my body can't do that now. I'll look into a trany jack. It is down for other repairs so this is going to be a driveway install.

The tranny only weighs 125 lbs but it is bulky and if you can't get the car up high enough to get a good bench press on it the tranny feels like it weighs 300 lbs. Not worth the pain and aggravation when tranny jacks are relatively cheap.
i used to do the TH400 tranny in my Chevelle on my back using the bench press method when I was younger, no way I could do it anymore.

That was horrible English on my part. Should have been weigh lol. But I see what your saying. It probably feels heavier lifting with just your arms rather than picking it up off the floor with your legs.

That's the one I've got and it works like a charm. Makes it much easier to remove the transmission, rear end, as well as a few other projects. It can aslo be used as a seat if you're working on some of the body panels. It made it much easier to repair the rear quarters on my car since you can adjust height and move on it..

Ah the good old days. We are all paying for it now. Get the harbor trans jack.

Dont get the trans adapter that fits on a 3 ton floor jack. It sits so high you would need to jack up the car higher than it would sit an a set of ramps. Buy the low profile unit that was designed for removing the trans

i have r&r'd probly 20 trans with only using a common floor jack and no help from others. pretty easy to do.

The 800lb rated jack from Harbor Freight sits pretty high as well.
