You live in a good area. Should be able to find a TB member close to help or a reputable shop. If all else fails just load the car up and bring it to me;) . It can be my next project:biggrin:

If your using the rope type rear seal it will be hard to turn until you properly seat it i.e. whack it.

my cranks turns effortlessly.A little elbow grease thats all.

You said 30 ft lbs and then after a whack, 12 ft lbs to turn it and then effortlessly??
What is it??

With out the rods/pist on the crank that sucker should freely by hand if not go NO FURTHER.

With the clearances where they are supposed to be and the rods and pistons connected, the crank does turn by hand now.

Hi,
Well, it seems you have had some good advice.Do you have a rope seal installed? If so, that could be a part of your initial problem. It would be nice if a good machinist could check things; maybe an align bore would be a good idea.If you decide to cover your ass by pulling it all down again, you might as well go for the gusto, and put studs on the bottom end,and good rod bolts. You will have to have the rods resized to do this. ARP stuff is fairly pricey, but well worth the investment. With all the Chinese parts floating around,it's nice to have a company that makes their own stuff, like ARP does.
I guess you are using the stock pistons, which is fine. They are pretty tough. You should pay special attention to ring gaps, and to the order of #1 and 2 rings. File if necessary. I recently freshened the motor in my Regal, and the stock rings fit perfectly, without adjustment, but it pays to check this.
Good luck with things, and remember that ounce of prevention adage!

I wouldn't waste piss on a rope seal, just my opinion. I reused the rod bolts on my motor but I did spring for new head bolts. The motor was built as cheap as possible but I did have any and all clearances checked. Had teh shop check ring gap and install rings and number all the pistons to corresponding bores. ALso had them install the cam bearings and gave them the cam I was using so all I had to do was slap it together. No, my motor probably won't hold up to 100 10 sec passes, but beings it was an 82 block and didn't plan on running that hard I didn't sink a buttload of cash into it. Now when I get past the bolt on stage I will build a 109 block and build it the way I want to. Your car won't ever see 600+hp so no need to go crazy with studs and sh!t like that. But at leasst make sure it's done correct as possible. If you have any more questions about assembly of your carb motor and whatnot don't be afraid to ask. I used to own a 79 sport coupe myself...which I miss a lot:frown:

Hi,
What's wrong with suggesting studs on ANY motor, when they only cost $50 ,and when you throw in the align bore, you're probably out 125 bills, max?Cheap insurance, in my opinion. To go further, the rods should be resized, with ARP bolts of course.Oops, thats another $100. You know, if you want a motor to last, you have to plan for maximum useage, and with our turbo cars,we see a lot of subsequent power enhancement that really forces the issue with a stock motor. The man has the chance to build for future endeavors, and cheaply, so he might as well take the opportunity.

 Whoa, put the switch back on the tree Papa Jackson;) I was just saying he doesn't need to build it like a brick sh!t house if he doesn't want to spend on it. Hell if I would've had 2 incomes instead of 1 back when I did mine I wouldn't have even bothered with an older block nor would've bought used heads and other cheap stuff like I did. Actually I wouldn't have even bought that piece of crap out in the garage. I would've just spent the money on one in decent shape that already ran and didn't have mice sh!t in it.

If you go cheap or spend the extra money for a little assurance and insurance, just make sure it's done to spec:wink:

Not trying to discourage you from spending a little cash. Just giving "my opinion"

But then again 83TTYPECOOLED:) , even though I now have extra income, doesn't mean I get to spend it;) ! I bought the t/a, bought one of them fancy flat screens set up for HD, that way when I watch my locals, they get f*cked up when it gets "weathery" outside. Oh that pisses me off when I'm stuck watching "sex and the city" reruns! But Care Bear movies look awesome on it:biggrin:
