My friend had an idea to use a carbon dioxide fire extinguisher to cool my front mount intercooler while sitting in the staging lanes. I thought it would be a good idea, sure be better than spraying ice water with a bug sprayer. Any body try it? Only down side would be freezing the grill:eek:

There was a product at the 2002 or 2003 SEMA show that did something similar to this. It has a series spray bars that were placed over the fins (attached to the IC) that shot a cold gas over the fins and in turn increased the IC's efficiancy. I was looking into this when I looking for IC's for my old Ford 2.3T

i bought a used nitrous kit from a guy locally and used the line and solenoid out of it then i bought a 20 pound CO2 bottle with a syphon tube in it and i took some copper tubing and made a spray bar that mounted right in front of my IC so it sprays CO2 on it seems to work relatively well freezes teh front of the IC withing a few seconds and the bottle lasts a long time

even had the neighbor lady paint the bottle its now solid black with the turbo six going all the way across it

All of the nitrous companies are doing this now-a-days. DEI is the company you are thinking of that won best new product at SEMA. They actually sponsor our race car. The kits work well for cooling the intercooler while sitting still with the car off for sure. They also work well if the air intake isn't too close to the intercooler. The CO2 has been known to cause some misfires on the dyno when it gets ingested into the air intake.

The new EVO8 from Mitsubishi has a factory front mount intercooler on it. It comes with a factory spray bar on it and a resevoir for windshield washer fluid. The sprayer can be activated with a switch in the center counsole to come on as you hold it manually or it will auto cycle by itself. I use it on my EVO when dyno'ing it between runs to cool the intercooler back off. I haven't seen any real difference with or without doing it. It definetely will make a puddle of water under the car though. There are guys taking these kits off their cars, myself being one of them. Probably could pick on up super cheap. The bottle is even black.

And I thought I was clever using my $10 "bug sprayer" with water, while sitting in the staging lanes...;)

Actually, it works well. Air blowing across the saturated fins causes a nice cooling affect. Direct Scan says my inlet temps are usually around 120-ish.

I've not ready any postings that give any truly worthwhile claims of substantial gains by using this piece, although the concept seems smart to me.
IMO, there are better ways to spend your money, than for a system like this, unless you make a cheap one like mentioned previously.

I would agree that there are better ways to spend your money.

One nice benefit of using the CO2 for the sprayer, it does double as a fire extinguisher. Most of the bottle that are used are 10 pounds, makes for a hell of a good extinguisher. It can be plumbed from a seperate inline selonoid and seperate switch, this lets you use it most of the time for the intercooler and incase of an emergency you can hit the seperate switch and put out a fire.

That must be the same booth I saw at the 2002 SEMA show. I was interested in that too, and was disappointed that the guy there had no literature or information to give out. Seemed strange that they would pay for the booth and not let you know how to buy their product. I would be interested if anyone knows what the company is and anything about it.

I have the 2002 SEMA book in my office. I've been the last three years. Anyway, I'll send myself an email to remind me to look it up this week. Can't do it tomorrow, as I'll be traveling for work, but hopefully can find an answer by week's end. Assuming no-one else pipes in with the correct info before that.

I posted the name of the company. It is DEI, Design Engineering Inc.

They sponsor both of my race cars actually. We are also a WD dealer for them.

Any of you guys that are interested in the kits I would be more than willing to get them for you at a big discount. They also make some kick butt turbo wrap kits and exhaust wrap. Their product line is expanding pretty quickly.

The CryO2 system is what you want to look for if you go to their website.

The kit will cool multiple things. You can run the (for example) CO2 "through" your fuel rail first, then they have a bulb that can be placed in the MAS tube or i/c plumbing that can also be cooled and then the CO2 ends up finally exiting on your intercooler. I think one of the biggest benefits is the fact of having it for fire control. I had never thought of that until it was brought up when I was at dinner with Dave, the president of the company, Friday night.

Dave, are ya going to be getting into the TR world (as a vendor)? I think that would be very cool. Good to see ya over here.:)

I understand how the CO2 will cool the IC, and it seems like a good idea. But it doesn't seem likely to cool many other things. The CO2 cools when it vaporizes. It is NOT cool as long as it is kept pressurized. So it wouldn't seem to do much for the fuel rail, for example. Not that I would want to cool my fuel rail anyway. Well, maybe, if it were a fuel rail feeding carburetors, instead of injectors. Plumbing the CO2 to more things besides just the IC would also make for more potential leaks, and more complication. Just spraying it on the IC would be enough for me..

hey David im interested in the exhaust wrap, actually something to wrap around my headers, how could i get some prices and info on where to buy?

NX makes a kit like this also. Not sure of the name of it though.Ive always heard that they really dont make any difference on a FM.Not sure on a stock loction IC though. If it were dyno/track proven id buy one.

Welcome aboard David:)

I have no intentions of becoming a full blown retailer for the TR's. We do sell quite a bit of stuff to friends and such now. It is more my dad's deal than mine. We get a call for a Buick now we just transfer them to him. He just finished a nice engine build for a local guy here, I think the guy said something about wetting his pants when it was all done;)

We have the wrap at our shop, I'm not there but you are welcome to give us a call. 9-6 Mon-Fri EST. 440-839-1900.

NX does make a super nice kit (they sponsor my race cars too) I tend to shoot their nitrous right into my intake though! haha

The nitrous kits have proven to make more power than the CO2 kits because some of the nitrous usually gets ingested into the engine. I have seen gains of 50 whp no the EVO's, cheating to call the gains "cooling of the intercooler" when it is actually a dry nitrous kit being sucked through the intake.

As for the CO2 not working on other components in series that isn't correct. The other components have to have an expansion chamber of some sort. The bulb for instance has a small football shaped cylinder that you can put inside of any tube. The CO2 comes to the cylinder in a -4 line and then expands when it hits this chamber, this makes the chamber basically solid ice on the outside. Then it is pushed further through the system and more -4 line until it comes to the i/c fogger. The system in theory is kick ass and does work to some extent. Ingesting it has been the only major draw back that I have seen. Cooling just in the staging lanes while the car is off works for sure.

Its called the "Inter-cooler" by NX
Alot of the import boys are running them here in AZ and I personally whatched a car pick up 35hp on a dyno run by spraying the intercooler.
Summit also sells a Co2 kit not sure of the price though
