The stator is a "bladed" piece in the converter that is held from rotation in one direction by the sprag. The sprag is a "one way valve" that allows rotation in one direction but not the other. The fluid is directed around by the stator to make the other side of the converter to out power into the transmission. I'm sure someone else can explain it better and I know YouTube has videos if you search.
