Daughter's husband has a 2005 Chevy Colorado. Fuel pump went out this morning. He had it towed to a Firestone dealer. They said $1300. They wanted $700 for the pump. I looked it up. The pump is $300 and there is 2.1 hours labor. They checked and it is covered so it is on its way to the Chevy dealer. Shame that this still goes on.

I get this all the time in our shop. "what I can buy the part for" and for what a shop charges for the pump is usaully double. I'm sure some of the 1300 includes Diag time, fuel filter, shop suplies, ect... If the shop cant matain a GP of 56% on parts and at lest 65% gp on labor they are going to fail. Im sure you can buy a dozen eggs at Piggly Wiggly for a buck, but Dennys will charge you a buck fifty for ONE on the side........Are the ripping you off?

That would cost +/- $400 in Phillipsburg Ks.

That's probably the Firestone near me. EVERYTHING is "$1300"

My Dodge Ram needed the AC charged (its a 1998). The "Condenser core is bad...$1300"

"just charge the A/C" was my response.

A year later, the A/C still works fine.

It was on McCarther and 635 in Irving. The dealer charges $345 for the pump and 2.1 hours of labor if it wasn't under warrenty.

I was close. The Grapevine Firestone is probably owned by the same people since its only about 6 miles from MacArthur/635.

I won't go back.

Man, I can tell I have gone thru too many jobs. A LONG time ago I worked at the Firestone at Walnut Hill and MacArthur. Also I worked at a Buick/Pontiac/GMC dealership in Grapevine down the street from that other Firestone (Freeman).

As far as it paying 2.1, was that warranty time? Its been a while since Ive worked on them but that seems low. I have also never done one on a Colorado but I am assuming you still have to drop the tank or remove the bed?

I know its different on cars, but at a freightliner dealer I work at its 105.00 an hour, parts, shop supplies(15% of labor cost) and taxes on parts and shop supplies. I know the car dealer I was at the labor rate was a tick higher.

it was looked up on Alldata. The tank comes out like our TR's. I have no issue with a mechanic making a good living. I do have a problem with a 100% markup on a $350 part and being charged $250 an hour. Just glad the kids checked with the dealer befor they had it fixed.

Not defending Firestone in any way...but dealer prices have come way down on parts lately. If they priced an aftermarket pump module, they are probably looking at a $700 list price with a cost in the $380-410 range. Now the $600 for daig, labor, and fuel filter seem to be a bit high.

I recently priced a bearing and hub assembly for a Dodge 1500 P/U. Local Napa was $380 list and the local Dodge dealer was $194 list. Now I always check the dealer first.

Ive seen some place get part pricing from a few places and charge the highest list they hear but buy the lowest cost.
Back when I was in the field customers payed list, now I hear that places area adding 20-30% to list.
I gotta tell you around here garages are closing all the time as they don't get alot of repeat customers because of this.

I know people can buy parts cheaper,But I would have no problem paying list if it was being repaired.
But on the flip side ive seen list be a markup of 150% sometimes
Like axles used to cost me 59 bucks at the local place and their list price
as 189.00.

An added min of an hour for diagnosis(more for wiring issues) to me is normal and book time is normal if its not padded

I agree that the price is high for the whole job, and you are right about the dealer in their pricing being waaaaaay better nowadays, but if a SHOP is going to buy a part, they HAVE to mark it up. I bet if that was a customer pay RO that the service Dept. will even mark up the pump OVER the parts Dept. counter sale. Im not goin to buy a $300.00 part and make 50 bucks. What if I put the pump in and its defective (been there done that) who absorbs that extra expense? Not the customer, the shop eats it ( or waits for a labor claim ) not to mention the fact that you re-question you Dia and re-trace extra time to find out the "new" part you installed is not any good. Fixing cars nowadays is really become a bitch! I had a 06 Camery that had a charing system issue and end up being that damn rear veiw mirror ( lots of gadgets in them things ) wired in wrong from the factory.

On a lighter Dallas note, They are beating the Giants 20-8 with 1:30 to go in the 4th
