It appears that the direct clutch lip seals were severely damaged and would not apply the clutches. The clutches and steels were burned and warped (cupped upward). There were pieces of the seals laying in the housing. The trans had only about 1000 miles since my rebuild. I thought I did everything right on the rebuild. The air check proved ok upon the assembly, this was maybe 4-5 yrs ago.
My question is what went wrong? If the seals were not sealing then the clutches would not be applied and thus the burning or was there no oil getting to them? Not sure how all this works but I do know that I always had good pump pressure. I also know the parts should not look they do.
I have attached some photos of the direct clutch piston seals to show how they were broken. I also show the low/reverse housing to ask if the rework from PTS was for a torrington brg (I asked this question in an earlier post).
Please advise what I should do differently or if you can see anything wrong. I don't want to rebuild it again and have the same thing happen. Let me know if you would like to see other photos as I have been taking every step of the way. Thanks for the help.

I am guessing you used a feeler gauge when you installed the piston into the drum. Most likely you cut the seal at that point. But not enough to not apply the clutch on air check. When it was put in service you see what happened.

Steve, I made a lip seal installer with piano wire and used that. Maybe the wire cut the seals. Where do you recommend I get the rebuild kit from? Is there a better 2nd gear band to use than the larger Alto? Thanks for your comments.

On the next rebuild try dual feeding the directs. I have never had much luck the the wide Alto band. I just use a good quality standard width band and have never had any problems. CK makes a decent rebuild kit but I'm sure there are others out there.

Be sure you used the correct seals. I always try to match them up by numbers as well as size. Call David Huske he sells the best band to use. I have no favorite kit.

Are there any downsides to dual feeding the direct? This is mainly on a street driven GN so I don't want to do anythuing that will compromise that. Are there instructions posted on how to do this? Thanks
