I just was browsing and came across this thread. I had a maximum effort Colt turbo back in the the mid 80s. It turned into a scary ride. By the time I added an intercooler, a few more cubes, exhaust and electronics the car became an animal. The only problem is that it was frightening to drive in the rain. In the dry, it was a jewel. I remember dusting off many a new Corvette as well as 944 Porches. The Dodge Shelby cars weren't even a challenge. People couldn't believe a little matchbox size car could be so damned quick. It ran very similar to a stock GN. I ran against a stock intercooled one, took him out of the hole and he pulled even. Nada after that. The car was all done by 120 thoug, gearing limited. It was deadly in the rain. Actually, let me rephrase that......... The worst handling, ill mannered piece of machinery with anything less than dry pavement. Still fun as crap in the dry, 1750 lbs and 185 HP (race gas only).

Too bad they cracked heads and blew gaskets quite frequently. And that twin stick was a hoot. In fact, I had that black and gold edition. The 84 is the hot model to get, after that it became the Mirage and was heavier and slower. Getting parts for the 84 is a real challenge. I would love to have that litte black and gold beastie back in my possession. I could smoke those P7Fs the whole way into 3rd. It did take a suspension re-do to get rid of some nasty wheel hop tendencies. In the end, the car was blistering for what it was, brutal power with not much refinement. It made the owners of many higher priced "performance" cars think that their ride was 'down on power" or "not running right", or at least that was the excuse most of the time. :D

Hey Joe sounds like you had the same one I had. Black with the gold striping and mine had the "Pocket Rocket" across the windshield. I bought mine cheap after my brother got put in jail for running from the police in it. The police report read that they halted persuit after he reached "in excess of 140 mph". They got him at a road block though. That was some time around '89/90. The colt turbo has been made fun of quite a bit here on this board but honestly it is the funnest car that I have ever driven. You are exactly right about driving in the rain. They had alot of torque and if you gunned it in a wet curve you went straight whether you wanted too or not but would corner on a dime with good tires and dry pavement.

Rene', Just looked at the pics and that is exactly like my old colt. From the fog lights to the louvers on the back. Man I wish you were just down the street. How many miles (Km) does it have on it now? Can you give me an idea of the buy it now price once it hits Ebay?

nice stories about the black n gold pocket rocket :D.

i read it´s an LE version from the colt.. is that true?
my gts colt got round about 85000 miles on it.

now i got no ideas about the price..this colt gts is really rare .. i have to think about, after i fit the car up..

I think they are nice rear wheel drive cars. Pretty sought after if I remember. You have one? Would make a good platform for a LC2 swap wouldn't you think?

Did you just purchace the car your self or have you had it in storage? As far as an "LE" version I don't know. I'm pretty sure it was a Mitsubishi in japan and Dodge brought it to the US as the Colt. Before this time the Dodge colt was a rear wheel drive in the US with an actual Dodge engine. Just bring it on to the US and make me a deal I can't refuse...

Special Edition, not Limited. Well..... I suppose it's how you want to look at it. Considering it was a one year only for '84, it's pretty darned limited.

My advice is to sell before it totally hooks you. The main problem with that car is the lack of parts. 84 was very unique, parts were scarce even when they were current...... it was a nightmare. 25+ years later, getting any repair parts would even a worse. It's a shame. Had situations been different, I would still have mine tucked away. Then again, it may have killed me.

*le sigh*

Kids kids kids... "My GN is the shizznit!" blah blah blah.

I had a 1984 Dodge Colt GTS Turbo. It was intercooled, had an ignition (Jacobs) and a handful of other minor upgrades.

I smoked 2 GN's in it. I ate Vette's for breakfast. A guy with a Z28 would come back to my work (I worked graveyards at a 7-11 at the time) every month or so with a new upgrade/mod and try to beat me.
..he came close 1 time.

No disrespect meant to the GN/GNX choir boys..they are indeed good cars (or were at least).. but all the nitwit remarks about the Colt are absolutely silly.

After over 20 yrs since I've sold that car, I still get people I haven't seen since high school who ask if I still have Her. (wish I did).. the car is a legend in SoCal *Naugles anyone?*

btw, on youtube, right now, is a video of a "mildly modified" 84 colt turbo running low 11's and is a daily driver. I suggest you look it up lest he finds you at a red light one day.

WOW, back from the dead.

I have respect for anything that can run the number. But to think that these have the value of a Turbo Regal is ludacris. Especially when you come to a web forum about the Buick. Welcome by the way. Funny you would go to the trouble to join and post. Welcome anyway.

Thanks for the Welcome :)

Truth be told, I came via a Bing search for the car itself (the colt).. many a year I have searched for more info on my old beast... and this is the first time any fruitful results have been listed...

I like Buick (especially the GN/GNX cars), I am a product of the 80's so I guess that's a natural.. just didn't like seeing all the trash being talked about one of the absolute true sleepers of the 80's.. a decade of ultra low performance as it was :(

I'm under no delusion that the colt is/will be worth something now or ever... but it was a street terror in it's day and I'd wage that it could hold it's own today..albeit more closely to it's subcompact class stock.

If you ever get a chance to drive a Colt GTS or an Omni GLH-S, I hope you enjoy it. Really, very fun little cars.

I looked at the GLHS omni and charger when they were new. While quicker than they look they aren't a 5.0 Mustang or a Turbo Regal. Good luck with the search. If I was going to do a sleeper , I'd go with a turbo caravan. 2.5 intercooled engine swap. That is a YouTube vid to be seen. And you can actually haul stuff in it.
