I just bought an 86 T-type, and the owner did not have any door keys for it. What is the best way to get a set of keys?

It's bone stock with 120,000 miles and needs a little interior TLC (headliner, rear seat back, door panels, dash (where the speakers go), shifter, ect.

Nice looking 86 WH1 you got there. 1 of 463 ,it's more rare than a GNX.Too bad it wasn't worth as much as a GNX. lol

keys

Hi,
I don't know for sure if your local dealer can cut keys for a 20 year old car, but I would try that first. Call them, then if they can do it, bring the title with you. If this doesn't pan out, then you will have to pull out the door panel, remove the lock and take it to a locksmith, who will easily be able to cut the proper key.Nice car, always have admired the two tone paints.Have fun!

Nice ride. You could call AAA if you have them and have someone come out and cut a key for you. Doesn't take but 30 minutes or so. Any automotive locksmith should be able to do it at a reasonable charge, especially if you take the car to them as opposed to them making a house call.

I didn't even know that I had purchased a WH1! I was just looking for a T-type (I still have the GN) and came across this. It wasn't even for sale. I knocked on the owner's door and bought it a few days later.

I have AAA, I think that I may give that a try. Thanks for the advice.

Yea, just tell them you lost the key. I actually lost the ignition key for my Olds years ago and they had some ex-con looking guy come out to the beach where I was stranded and he cut a key in about 15 minutes.

Hi,
"Ex con looking guy?" Come on, I probably look like an"ex con" after I have been working all day. Cut the guy some slack! Get a real job! Want to experience Wreckering? You should try it some time. It's a lousy way to make a living, for sure. But when you need these guys, they are there. Keep it in mind.
Sorry to make a stink, but I am trying to make a point. 'Nuff said.

If it was me i would just change out all the lock cylinders with new ones with new keys. I would feel safer that way. It might sound bad but I have heard of people selling a car and keeping keys so they can come back and steal or vandalize the car

A dealer cant cut you the door keys. GM did'nt stamp the codes on the lock cylinders. The most cost effective way would be to buy a new lock set. You can find these at NAPA and AutoZone. Unless you have UA6 factory installed theft deterrent. They use different locks and the aftermarket doesn't carry them. Just remember the WH1's used the black cylinders like the GN. Normal T-Types used the bright or chrome set.

As long as you are confident that the turnk and doors are still the same key, then I would go the easy route. Pull the trunk lock andbring it to a locksmith. They can take it apart and make a key for you. They should also be able to tell you the code of the key. Then, write it in a safe spot. It is better to get a key made from the code than copying a worn out one.
To remove the trunk lock, you just remove the small screw on the retainer plate, slide that out, and the lock should come right out. If it isn't as easy as this, just post ack, and I'll double check my instructions, on one of the back yard parts supply cars. :)
