This is likely to be a first of a series of posts as I get to the bottom of this.

I rebuilt my 200-4R. It has a PTS deep pan, a PTS shift kit, new seals, clutches, etc. A PTS pressure regulator and a GN servo.

I put in 13.5 quarts. First off, I believe the deep pan needs at least 14 if not 16 quarts, correct?

In any case I wanted to back the car out a few feet and bring it back in.

In park at idle: no TV I get 100 PSI, full TV 200 PSI.

I did not write down the pressure in all other gears. They did not look unsual if a bit high. I can do that test tomorrow.

I put it in reverse and it started clunking as I backed out. Oops!

I put it in drive to bring it back in (10 feet) and nothing!

3 nothing.

2 nothing.

I brought it all the way down to 1 and it happily pulled me back up the drive.

I put it in park and the parking pall did not catch.

I raised the rear. And went through the gears with the rear raised.

When I put it in reverse, the wheels catch and do not move. If I lightly goose the gas, the wheels turn. If I stop the wheels with the breaks, I have to do that again to get the wheels turning. I think I heard some clunking noises.

In D - 3 - 2 - 1 the wheels moved when the rear was raised.

More interesting - in Neutral, if I tip the gas, the wheels go in reverse.

I am guessing I did something wrong when I reinstalled the parking pall rod and/or the manual valve.

I checked my pro-ratchet ****er adjustment, it looked fine.

I did the compressed air test for all the assemblies, they check out just fine.

Any thoughts?

 D

Ok, I checked the ATSG. It says that in 2 - 3 - D, the low roller clutch should be holding. in 1 the low-reverse clutch is applied.

So if the car only pulls in 1, I guess my problem is with that roller clutch.

Do I bother checking trying anything else? Or do I just drop it and disassemble again?

Thanks,

D

I think I found the problem.

I hope there isn't too much damage.

I dropped the pan and found that the rear assembly, carrier and output shaft had slid back about and inch. The rear internal gear slid back to the point that it would not catch on the parking pawl.

The snap ring must have broke off. (Hmpf - I did check that clearance)

Didn't see any metal particles anywhere in the oil.

Looks like I am dropping the trans and starting over.

Anyone have a clue how much damage there might be?

D

No idea. That has never happened to me before. Let us know what you find. While you're in there, double check everything else too.

Tear down complete.

Indeed the snapring came off. Grmbl.

Gonna replace the snapring.

The damage seems minimal. The plastic governor gear is slightly munched. I have a spare.

Putting it back together. Likely the next test drive will be next weekend...

I think it is great that you are able to just jump in and tear it down again. Any 'secrets' you'd like to devulge on the teardown/assembly process. I am about to embark on a 2OO4R and bought some cores from the recycler to practice on before I attempt a BRF. Glad to hear you were able to diagnose the problem. Let us know how it turns out.

There's always a way...

In the pic above, I rigged an engine stand on its end to hold the trans upright for "loadind". The crate is to support the outpushaft but the trans can hang freely.

I had no real special tools. The tools that came in handy were: three snapring pliers, one real long large screwdriver (grind a notch in the blade), a large vise, visegrips, coathanger wire, feeler gauges (I also used them to slip on the new seals), wood mallet, inch pound torque wrench and dial indicator.

And tons of patience.

When cleaning the valve body valves... do the valves one at the time.

Oh and an air compressor set at 30 psi to check the various assemblies.

It runs!!!

A few problems... but it runs. AAaaaaaah, I love OD (overdrive that is)
