Can you drop the pan with out jacking up the engine? The rear main seal instructions didn't seem to mention this unless I missed it.

TIA

You can if your motor mounts are not shot. If they are put a 2x4 across the trans pan and jack it a little bit. Just enough to clear.

ive read on some cars you can do it w/o jacking up the engine but on my car you had to and it made things a whole lot easier:D

Thanks guys,

I'll attack it again in the a.m. I'm hoping I can just ondu the DS motor mnt and let that side rock up as that mount looks easy to currently get to. Hope that gives me enough space.

If you have any other tips or tricks for rear seal replacement, feel free to let me know. I've now read all the stuff on gnttype about it.

I've dropped the pan without undoing motor mounts or jacking up the engine. Years ago I even did one in front of my apartment, (much to management's dismay...). I've replaced the rear main seal like that before too. However, I've got rather small hands, and can usually manuever them in tight spots. Best wishes on your painful project!

Engine upwards

When you remove DS eng. mount ... just undo nut and remove the long (horizontal) bolt ... the one you can easily get at from front and back. Jacking on the trans pan (protect it) will git ya up.

Good luck releasing pan from gasket .... if they been in place for a while there will be strong adhesion. Try prying the pan downwards from the front of the pan at the corners of the block (in the area just below the front cover). Once the adhesion is broken, the pan should fall away pretty clean.

Don't forget to work the pan down and away from the oil pick-up and its notch at the baffle.
