I'm trying to catch up with current technology and I see alot of the new combo players.

I need to replace a broken VCR and they are dirt cheap nowadays, but I would also like to finally get a DVD player too.

I still own and play alot of VHS tapes and would like to enjoy the picture quality of the DVD format. Space is not an issue and prices seem to have settled down on decent DVD players. I'm constantly reminded about what would happen if the VCR or DVD player goes kaput, but the pricing ($150-200) almost makes them disposable.

Any input would be appreciated. TIA

Hi Chuck,

If I may like to piggyback on your thread a bit and ask if anyone who replys to Chuck has had any experience with the new Phillips VHS/DVD machine that supposedly will let you take your VHS tapes and convert them to DVD's.

If true does anyone here have that machine and what are your thoughts? I know its pricey now at like $700 but if it works as advertised would be great to take all those VHS tapes I got and convert them to DVD's.

Chuck hope alls well with you and hope to see you at Etown one day if this rain ever stops......lol.

Stay well.

Ive got the DVD/VCR combo its a cool deal - only thing is I heard if one breaks your done but I dont know I think it was under $200 in circuit city

I think those combo units are a little pricey. You could buy a decent DVD player for about $80, and a nice VCR for around $50, so you're out $130 for 2 seperate pieces of equipment. I believe those combo units are round $179 or so.

i got 2 combos in my house...same one i 4get what brand, but they were the cheapest available, ~$200, and havnt had any problems yet but then again they arent used much and ive never used one to tell you how good they work.....but id just buy an xbox and use your old VCR....your DO have a VCR right;)

I don't really like combo players at all, I bought my dvd player for $80 (canadian), and it will play anything you throw at it, dvds, svcds, vcds, dvdrs.. the only thing it doesn't do perfectly is play all dvd regions.

I don't know much about the supposed combo that lets you convert vhs to dvd, but if you have a video card with video in and a cd burner, you could convert them on your computer.

Could use the PS2 as a DVD player too (I use it in my truck)
best of both worlds video games and DVD :)
just sometimes have to put in a password for DVD's havent figured that out yet

I have a real inexpensive one and it works great. Easy hook up, fewer remotes. Easy to flip back and forth (I can have the satellite on, a dvd playing and a vhs tape going at the same time and flip back and forth with the touch of one button) Not saying I do that, but i could. Also less clutter.

My folks just recently bought one of these combos and it works well for them. As mentioned before.. easier to have fewer remotes. If you are really concerned about one or the other breaking, you can invest in an extended warranty. I've done that before for speaker boxes... sure enough blew a speaker and had it replaced with no probs. Best Buy. Warning, I have had other probs with Best Buy service.

Someone mentioned regional DVDs. Living in Germany, I had to find a DVD player that played American DVDs.. most people aren't aware of the regional DVDs. Are there DVD players in the U.S. that play DVDs from all regions?? Or do I have to bring mine from here? Sorry to piggy-back on the thread.
