Put the car on ramps today and poked around the engine. When the engine is cold, there is no tick. Either in gear or out of gear. As the engine warms up, the tick shows up around the rear of the engine on the driver's side while it's in gear. If I put my listening device (long screwdriver) to the head/block/valve cover area, I can hear a slight tick. I't definetely more noticable outside the car. I'm thinking it could be a sticky lifter. I'm going to run a pint of ATF through it for 50 miles or so of easy driving and see if I get the noise to quiet down. Before I do that though, I'm going to pull the valve covers again and see if there's anything obviously wrong.

I would think that if it was a lifter ticking once the oil has warmed up, you would hear it most right under the intake.

I just dont think that crawling under the car and listening to the side of the block will eventually be a lifter issue, maybe piston slap, but dont want to go there.

Since the ticking noise is closest to the back of the motor, i would almost think that the transmission front pump is making noise.

If you could video tape it and put it on YouTube - Broadcast Yourself. we could get a great jumpstart on this darned ticking noise :)

Found it - Drivers side header again

You're right. After I posted, I thought "why louder outside the engine?" I put some tranny fluid in the up-pipe and made smoke, then crawled under the engine. I found a very small leak on the underside of the rearmost header collector. Fuzzy pic attached. I think I'm going to buy another used stock header and put them on rotation. I can't afford new ones right now. :frown:
