If you are aware of this process of lock picking than disregard. I personally just became aware of this today, and have also learned of pending legislation to fight this problem. Heres the link. YouTube - Bump Key HOWTO

if you've ever done any lockpicking, you'd know you can open locks like that with a rake just about as fast. Some stuff, probably faster. Masterlocks for example, are a joke. I can open one of those in literally less than 10 seconds.

The bump key does take all the skill out of it but like I said, anyone who's ever dabbled in lock picking can open most common locks very quickly.

I want to change my locks like...yesterday!! What manufacturers will this stuff not work on?

For door locks, I dont know. Some of the car locks have gotten a LOT tougher, I havent really seen any door locks that have looked exceptionally difficult. Im sure you can get some that are but they are probably quite pricey.

Now granted, Im more of a casual lockpicker and picked it up because I thought it would be cool to know how to do it so I dont spend a lot of time obsessing about locks or looking at every one out there.

I would think, though that any lock that uses teeth on both sides of the key would be more difficult to open, with bumping maybe not, with standard picks, yea.

The guns are just about as bad as bumping. If you're proficient with a gun, you can open a lot of locks really fast.

Thanks for the info. Now I know why I am raising a 7 month old devil dog! The other is 8 1/2 yrs and very capable of fending someone off, but who knows how long he will be around. If they get past the 2- I have hollow tips !!

Primus Hi
We use this key for high security, has cuts in the side, look at the pics,,not sure if they can be "Bumped" or not

Is this **** legal? IE BumpKey.com? Are they selling theft keys or is it some kind of legal service key?

Worrying about a key lock on a G body isn't worth the effort, I can get in one in about 15 seconds with a coat hanger.

When I was 15 I could pick a master lock in about 1.5 minutes, and no, I wasn't a criminal, just a bored kid with a lock picking set. :D

Not where I was going with this.

I intended this for home security issues, hell u can always tow a car.

Ever hear of an Alarm system ..........., a prybar will get you in alot quicker than a lock pic set anyway a hard shoulder or boot will work pretty good on alot of doors . Hey just because your paranoid doesnt me people arent out to get you !

Exactly. Most door frames ae pine, one good kick can break the door jam while the lock remains locked. Heck, I 've done it before.

The problem with bump keys is that someone could have gotten in and out of your house without you knowing they were ever there. I expect it won't take very long for all the major manufacturers to realize the kink in their locks armor and make appropriate modifications.

That is why the first thing I did when I bought my house was to remove the strike plates and replace them with 3" screws. The 1" screws that come with locks are a joke......when you kick a door, the 2x4 door framing splinters and the strike plate gives. With 3" or longer screws, you have to snap the 2x4 pretty much in half.....not an easy thing to do.

This is nothing new and the lock mfr's have done nothing for most locks but then they do make better locks and non of that makes the glass window any stronger!

Locks just keep honest people honest.

The lower grade Masters can be shimmed, but higher grade Master and other padlocks with ball bearing locking mechanisms can't. So it's not fair to say Master locks are useless.

Bumping isn't as easy as those videos make it seem. It requires knowledge of locks and keyways and a developed "feel". It's an old technique that for whatever reason has been brought to e-fame lately.

I'm a bonded locksmith; personally I can pick faster than I can bump, and since time is money that's what I do. I don't know anyone in the business who chooses bumping as their primary means of defeating lockouts.
