I bought an 86 GN in December. It's been in the paint shop for 7 weeks. I drove it today, and when I shut off the motor the fan kept running for about 4 minutes. It that normal? It was a cool day here 33 degrees.

unplug the biggest relay on your dr front inner fender
source of many a problem like this
simply unplug and never look back
worthless fan delay relay
destined to fail from day 1

Yep, delay relay is probably corroded from all the years of water getting at it, as was said just disconnect it and tuck the connector out of the way.

The relay does have a function when working properly

As stated above, OR the relay is actually doing it's job and trying to cool the motor down because it's running too hot. A car can still overheat even if it's 33 degrees out. What thermostat? Have a gauge? Scanmaster?

x2 to that, unplug and never look back.

Thanks for you replies. This is a BONE STOCK GN. I don't know what thermostat. Don't have a scanmaster. The antifreeze wasn't bubbling in the overflow so I would doubt if it was hot.

Could be a short to ground on the CTS also

There are 2 connectors on this relay. Should I unplug BOTH?

I guess I should elaborate.... since no one else here has told you why.....

The big relay is a "fan delay" relay... it's main purpose is to allow the fan to run after the engine is turned off. The fan will function normally with the engine running even with the big relay unhooked.....

Um, see post No. 6 above with the link. That explained it pretty well - if you clicked on the link

I stand corrected John.... I'm busted... I didn't follow the link. Sometimes I type before I think.... sorry.....please don't hold that against me....:o

FWIW... it was post #5
