Hello, My name is Joe. I'm from the northern Kentucky, Cincinnati, Ohio area. I just traded my way into a 41k 87 GN, so im moving over from Ls1 land. Wow is there alot to learn about these cars, I actually got the car modded already so now im really confused.....
I'm just gonna describe everything the way the guy i got it from explained it to me..
3" down pipe with cutout
small cam
60mm turbo ????
42lb injectors
aftermarket upper intake manifold
meth injection kit
2800 stall
Drag bags in the rear
2 chips, one for 93 and one for 110
It also has a manual boost controller inside.
If anyone can tell me if these are good mods that go together that would be great, also what do you think this beast should run in the 1/4?
thanks for your time, gotta run lots of learnin to do!
-Joe

All sounds good. Best advice is to get a scantool, and then find a senoir guy near you to help you out.

is the turbo stock? I dont know what size they are stock. i'll try to get some numbers off of it

take turbo cover off & post a photo of turbo.

Just what you have sounds like 12's but I am senior & no means an expert.

The only way to tell is buy a scan tool, check for NO-knock & run down the track for a base line.. Lots has to do with how good you launch off the line & well tuned these cars are.

Good find and welcome to the site. It sounds like you have a 12 second car there. Do you have any specs on that "small" cam? My car is modded like yours and I just bought a 206/206 roller but haven't installed it yet.

no specs on the cam. The guy i got it from got it on a trade and missed his f-body so i traded him my supercharged TA for it. Anyway he told me exactly what i listed as he didnt know the specs only he was told it had a small cam. It does have a noticable idle though

Welcome

The good news is: Theres a thousand ways to make these things haul a$$ and stay together.

The bad news is: Theres a million ways to kill the motor and not even know you did it.

Before you go flogging the poor thing to death, have someone that "knows these cars" check it over and make sure that it's not lean, or getting any knock. Your first mod should be to get a Scan Master and learn how to use it. It's not that hard. Your rod bearings and head gaskets will thank you:) .

The most effective thing that you can get for these cars is knowledge.

Your not that far from running in the elevens;)
Happy spooling...

ok i figured out a few things on the car
- the turbo says A/R .60 m24 garrett on the front cover (no clue except that its a garrett lol)
- the car has a Hemco upper plenum and a matching tb
- the car has a alky kit that was installed when i got it. it doesnt come on but i hooked a wire to the pump and it works. Is there some kind of "pill" that goes in the line or does it just spray and mist? It looks like it has the vaccum lines that hook into some kinda of switch and i would guess that thats what activated the alky but im clueless... I have even thought of pulling it off and going with a totally new setup that way i know what i have.

A Scanmaster is a little black box with red leds that taps into the ECM and tells you the info the ECM is receiving from the engine. A very vital tool that all TR's should have. You can usually get them for under $300 and some of the vendors on this board sell them.

The alky kit is supposed to come on when you build boost to prevent knock. Depending on what kit you have, the Razors use a vacuum line off the plenum to a 3 bar MAP sensor on the pass side fender, that when senses boost, tells the control box to kick on the pump to only give as much alky as the engine needs. Some of the older SMC kits have a vacuum line that goes off the plenum into the controller box.

You will need to find out which one you have for sure for us to tell you more. But see if there's a prime switch for the alky kit on the control box, if so test it and make sure it works. (remove the nozzle/orfice and verify it's spraying) If so then get into the boost a little at a time and watch your Scanmaster (when you get it) for knock....it will display on the "knock retard" side of the screen....anything over 1-2 KR immediatley let off the gas pedal.

Also get you an audible knock alarm from Casper's electronics....it's $51 and it will beep at you if the ECM detects knock.

thats great info thanks. i'll just try to get a pick of some of the alky kit stuff and see if you can tell me whats what. Can you tell me anything about the turbo from the info i posted?

welcome sounds like you have a nice car there. first you need to visit Turbo Regal Web Site and do as much research you can. especially spring cleaning. make sure all is up to snuff before going wot. all vacuum lines are good and ziptied as well as all big hoses are secure with clamps. get a scanmaster and start slow in your tuning. you need to find out what alky system you have because they all work differently as far as tuning. also you need to post where you live so maybe someone from here lives close to you and can teach you and show you how these cars work. as they are different in some ways from most cars but still retain the old muscle car way of working on them. they are very tempermental. good luck on your car dont be to quick on racing as you will have more fun learning as you will racing. i alomst forgot make sure your boost is low 12 or so and your alky is turned off. you need to start tuning the car with out alky and no knock before going up the ladder.

Congrats on the purchase!
I also came from an LS1 car - 98 Formula H/C.
If you have a mechanical background, and you spend a few hours reading up about these cars - you'll be fine.
Are you looking to drive the car the way it is? what time would you like to run in the 1/4?

Post up some pics of the ride
