Would it make sense to consider changing the class to 1/8 mile?
-It would absolve people from having to re do their cages.
-It would allow the rules to be opened up on combination
because I don't see a bigger than 88mm turbo having an advantage in a short race.
-It would also put less wear on the motors.

Other things to consider
-Make the class a Drag Radial Class
-Open the class up to twins but limit the compressor size. 62 or 67

Yes I sold my chassis and motor and I live in California but this is my 2 cents worth. It seems like you get what you pay for! LOL

I think the 1/8th mile might be a good option for safety period without the new certifications... They are there to save your life IMO... I don't think the make them up to be hard azzes...

I showed the thread to Randy and he made some calls... Seems the official ruling on the new classification still isn't out yet but should be hopefully in a week or so. They are supposed to post it on YB as soon as announced... We will have the book on the way for anybody that needs anything:biggrin:

If the cars were running 7.50's at 185-190 I'd lean towards the 25.5 chassis. The cages in Tony and Dave's cars certed to 7.50 just 3 years ago until SFI changed the rules. Does it make it any less safe than they were a few years back just because SFI says so......I'd say no. There's a major difference in a car with a home built cage and one that can pass tech. If the cage's in the TSO cars pass cert to 8.50 and the owner's feel safe running .5 second quicker in them, let them. It's really the mph that SFI worries about anyway. Would this have even came up is Tony ran 8.51 at 176.......Probably not

There's a reason why they update the rules, because the previous spec was found not to be safe at the speeds attained. By your logic does that mean your safe not wearing a seatbelt in a car older than 1964 since they weren't mandatory at that time?

I personally don’t have any problem with you going 200+ MPH in a convertible and no roll bar if you so choose, as long as no one is in the lane next to you. The rules are there for your safety and the safety of the driver next to you.

I'm all for 1/8 TH twins are ok to. Drag Radial for sure it just makes you tune your car better.I think this going in the right directions.Just my 0/2

What does a car racing next to you without a roll bar/cage have anything to with the safety of your car? If he/she is going to wreck, they're going to wreck. Maybe w/o proper axle retention devices, wheels studs and stuff like that, then yes.

if the driver is lax on basic safety equipment....what is to say driver is not lax on mechanical issues...such as items you stated above...I do not want to bring it up up but with Odell in BG look what happened...an 8 sec car and he is racing in overalls and an open faced Helmet....thank goodness he had a cage,,,but what if a car next to him did not have the safety equipment and he t-boned him/her...there should be a standard...so that when you pull the trigger on the line,,,the racer next to you is also on the same page....Safety should be #1 PRIORITY...

What does Odell's racing atire have to do with the car next to him? So what your saying that Odell's atire was the cause of his wreck?

You can't go ASSuming that since the car does not have a cage/bar that the car is lax on mechanical requirements.

When you drive your vehicle down the road and you fail to wear your seatbelt, you are jeoperdizing the drivers around?

So by your analogy if your racing a sub 8.50 car and your in the other lane than your car should be also certified for sub 8.50 times Im am little confused. why is it that no cares about how the brakes work in said car, or what shape the tires are in, or if there are any loose bolts that could cause the car to loose control and combined with bad brakes take out the car next to them. No instead the cage has to be proper spec to make the other driver feel safe to line up against him. Also does anyone feel comfertable in thinking that if said car is 25.5 spec that it is a garrentee that the car has good brakes, good shocks, suspension is all tight Guys this is Heads up racing if you dont feel comfertable doing it please don't

Hey Billy,

It's the extra frame support making the car stiffer and better able to handle the power to go that fast that I’m referring to. The spec is not “just” the addition of the funny car cage for the driver. There is other added structural stuff to keep the car from twisting like a pretzel.

This argument is as old as the “track prep” and "no tech" ones and isn't going to be solved here. My intention in commenting really wasn't to start up an argument. My feeling is and has always been that you need to be up to the correct safety specs for the performance level you are running. Some disagree with that and there really isn't anything myself or anyone else on the Internet is going to do to change your mind. Before everyone piles on and another long thread starts up on this subject I'm going to bail out. I’m not brought into it again I won’t comment and maybe the thread can die before any name calling starts.

Tony and Billy you both have valid points......should a 13 sec car with little to no safety equipment be lined up next to a 9 sec car....In my opinion no...specially in a bracket race....but I have seen it happen....my point about Odell is that at alot of other tracks he would not been allowed to stage...so who is to say what other things might have been over looked....I do not want to start a major argument...but Safety should be an issue....one day at any event there is going to be a major injury or death..then everyone will start screaming about safety....Look at Nascar today...it took death before safety barriers we installed...and Dale to die to include Hans devices and no more open faced Helmets....NHRA shortened the 1/4 mile....lets be pro-active instead of re-active...thats all I am saying...

First off Artie I don't know of any racer that runs TSO that takes safety lightly. All of the TSO cars have licensed drivers and certified cages so I don't know what your argument is there.

Second, the SFI spec has nothing to do with stiffness of the chassis and suspension of a car and yes that funny car cage was added only for driver safety. The spec was designed to protect the driver and has nothing to do with anything else. The more current 25.5 spec has additional bars underneath in the event there is a bottom of car collision when the car is airborne. A fwe drivers were killed this way and that is one of the BIG reasons for all of the current chassis updates. In addition the spec was changed more so due to the MPH some of these cars are obtaining and not necessarily the ET.

There is no argument here, safety is important and taken very seriously by all those involved in racing at this level. I don't know why you think I am not concerned about the safety of the drivers racing TSO? All of out host tracks are NHRA facilities and all perform very through tech inspections of these cars. Yes including Beach Bend which checked all my certs this year and last. I don't think Tony takes safety any less than anyone else and obviously Norwalk didn't view his car as being unsafe either.

my point. some of you people talk safety but yet you brag about street racing and going fast on the street, wow, the nhra chassic certification guy that come to my garage and certified my old car said my cage and extra bars was a over kill for 8.50 et certification, no big deal, it did protect my but,
as far as my old helmet open face, i had a new full face helmet in the trailer it is hard to get my glasses on , so i took off my right glove, had my left one on, took off my neck brace before i crawled out of the car, i had on my sfi approved jacket , pants was in the trailer along with my sfi approved shoes,
now as far other tracks i have run at i have dressed the same way at all of them , wrong i should have had my sfi pants and shoes on along with the full face helmet last year the open face helmet was legal,
i dont wear my seat belt in my truck or farm tractors half the time so who cares, a local cop said he drove his charger police car 147 mph on the interstate, no helmet or fire suit was he safe?
my new [87] regal will be done in a few days, im a little slower than i once was,, it will be nhra legal with a certified cage 8.50 et,
and my attire had nothing to do with my crash,
my opinion if you have a problem with rules or some people stay home,
i dont like the bpg so i dont go to national trail, big deal only one car,
good luck, oc,,,

Glad to hear the new car is coming along so quickly, and I'm sorry you won't be in Columbus so I can see it :-). Maybe Cecil in Oct, or is that a little too far?

I like how so many guys with 12 and and 13 sec cars are so worried about the guy in the other lane. lol.

The current turbo rule is what it is because of a certain racer/vendor wanting to allow the turbonetics Y2k in and rule changes being made for that racer (that no longer participates in the class) allowed the larger Precision 4788 in to the class.

I heard he switched from the Turbonetics Y2K 88 turbo combo and upgraded the turbo to a PTE 47/88 turbo, but had some problems his last track outing. Hopefully he will get it sorted out and come back and race the class with us. He always ran very very consistent and it would be nice to get a chance to race with him again some day.

Sort of new here, but isn't that the Bright Orange TSO car that runs consistently in the 9's ?
It looks nice however.

Yep, from what I heard he hasn't turned it up yet, but I suspect he should be running mid/low 8's with the new upgraded turbo if he decides to turn it up. Hope he comes back and runs TSO, however when it comes to bracket racing, he would be a bracket car I would not want to race against. You can always expect good reaction times, big wheelies followed with a 9.0x so that's going to be hard to beat.

Do I need to change Location if I post from a diifferent location?
