That's non sense. Does the PD you reported it to have an autotheft division? We seize cars all the time if we suspect stolen parts are on a car. If you have someone who can identify parts then that should have been enough to tow the vehicle until a search warrant was issued. Your friend would need to fill out an affidavit detailing why he thinks the motor is his and details on his car being stolen. It is rare that the Police get a break on s situation like this and should see this as an opportunity to catch a car thief (F-en hate thiefs) which is very to tough to do these days.

The VIN won't match the block. That doesn't mean sh!t. A stolen set of rims won't match the VIN either. Sounds like you spoke to a lazy azz cop to me. Call back and ask to speak with a supervisor if the guy is too lazy to do his job competently.

Yes there is a VIN on the block on the driver's side bottom near the flexplate. You won't be able to see it unless it is clean and you have a good light.

If your buddies car had the original motor it should match his VIN, providing the thieves did not obscure it.

they impounded the car but said they couldn't hold because the vin on the perps car is good

i think the last four of vin is on the block under the starter, have to un-bolt the starter to see it.

i know on the driver side is the 3.8 or 4.1 and block casting number. but it should have some of the vin number somewhere, and i'm thinking it was under the starter.

and talk to a cop that isn't getting off in 10mins. -

Well what u can see vs. what u can look at are two different things. The VIN not matching up to his car won't mean anything cause motors are changed all the time. Matching to ur friends car is different but u cant see a VIN number on the block by looking for it while the engine is in the car most likely. Stolen Rims are often identified by owners when they are seen on other cars but considering rims and blocks look the same there has to be further investigation.

Did they even do an investigation? They certainly didnt need to tow a vehicle to find out if the VIN matched the Title. Rims will sometimes have personal #'s engraved in them on the back side but again u cant see anything from looking at it. Things need to come off.

The PD is either unfamilar with how to solve an auto theft case or just plain lazy.

I forget if its the last 6 of the VIN or the whole VIN, but it is definitely stamped on a flat area near the back of the block. They are small, maybe a 1/4" tall. I know because I checked on my car to see if my motor was original, and yes the numbers matched. I also did not have to remove anything to see it, just get underneath the car with a good light.

The casting numbers are cast into the block and large and obvious but of no help to you since they are not unique to your car.

Maybe if you could show the police that the VIN number on the block matches the VIN on your friends stolen car it would help your case.

So your friend found part of the car in another car that he was asked to help get running. He must know who's car it is - what do they say about the engine?

I see the cops in your area are about as useful as the cops in my area :( Get Brett over there - he will shoot everybody and ask questions later.

Was it the original engine? Then it will have his name on it in the form of a VIN

Does the car have any other parts from ur friends car other then the motor?

What does the owner of the car that the motor was found in have to say about the situation?

well benny the engine builder in our area, everybody knows he is good with turbo buicks, his best friends was the 1 with the car stolen.a local speed shop with the hot items who mostly works on v8s couldn't get the car to start.with benny being the most knowledgeable in this area word got around.that he could fix they offered to pay for his diagnoses not knowing that he built car.let me tell how dump these f_cks r .the perps had a gn car that was stolen was a t-type blue int column shift bench seats.they put column in with shifter in floor and bench seats.any way they used body parts 2 they painted the stuff but we scratched bumpers & was chrome underneath same with fenders blue underneath.ill keep u guy posted on outcome

he payed 4 all that **** talking about he has receipts lol

if he has the title still and the vin matches on the block, he should get that motor back. just keep track of that car so it doesn't go awol if you know what i mean. isn't vin on the tag that's on the cowl also? are there any thing that he did to the body, interior that could he identify that this car is his. suspension?,the more he can show receipts for the better if it's still on it.

Can you tell us which speed shop it is so people know which scumbags to stay away from?

Part of the VIN IS stamped, not cast, on the machined, vertical block pad. Dr side, just at the trans mating face.

"the perps had a gn car that was stolen". Maybe, if it is an 86, it is my "ex GN", that was stolen from Kip Asplund??

I'd not waste my time w/ the local "Barney Fife". It's time for the state police, and the DMV to get involved... Especially, if the cars were stolen out of state, and transported across the state line.
I can provide a list of at least 20 items that will ID the body/chassis.
