Obviously this is not my Buick, but rather my old 2000 GMC pick up. It died on me today and I’m almost sure it’s the fuel pump. Does anyone know of a way to test the pump prior to pulling it out? The truck has a 34 gallon tank and of coarse it happened just after leaving the gas station.
Thanks in advance.
Chad

do a fuel pressure test. and check for power at pump. I load test them . check the connector at the sender and make sure it is not melted. they have a repair harness for this problem. If it is melted you need the pump also. good luck with that full tank:eek:

If you need to replace the pump, remove the tailgate, drivers side bolts from the bed, loosen the pass side bolts and lift the bed. Put a jackstand on the drivers side tire to hold up the bed. Then you can get to the pump.

Thanks guys. I just got off the phone with the GM dealer and found out the pump is $562.32. I was really hoping is was just a plugged filter.

My Father-in-laws Suburban just had the Fuel pump die on Monday. I think my wife said it was about a $1000 for the tow and replacing the fuel pump.

always replace fuel filter with pump. if the filter was plugged it would of damaged the pump.

always replace with gm pump. the aftermarket pumps are junk. we install tons of gm pumps here. the aftermarket junk pumpa customers bring in time to time to save a buck always cost them more in the long run

FYI, in many cases (2003 GrandAm) the fuel pump comes with a complete unit with the fuel level sender and such. Makes it easier to replace but if you don't need the other stuff, then you could just buy a aftermarket Walbro pump and swap out just the pump. The unit for the GrandAm was $300+.
Don't know if the your vehicel "pump" comes with teh whole assembly or not.
You will have to check it out.

Thats for the whole shabang in the fuel tank. Pump, sending unit and hangar. The pump aint serviced seperately. And I dont think a Walbro can be rigged in it's place.:(

A Walbro pump fit perfectly in my '94 Silverado when I converted it to an LT4 engine. Take it apart and see, most of these pumps for TPI, LTx, LSx, and our TRs are the same from what I've seen with just a little modding of the rubber fuel line in the tank going from the hanger to the pump, getting rid of the oscillator. A Walbro is about $125. As mentioned earlier, I wouldn't buy any pump except a Walbro or a GM unit, those are proven to last.

I feel for you dude. People would pull into my old gas station to fill up and the cold fuel would shock the hot pump and thats what would happen. The worst time would be in the dead of winter and the whole shop would reak of fuel, I really dont miss that crap. What would make the job worse is if the lines going to the tank were rusted and/ or siezed. I always tell people to keep the tank at least half full to keep the pump cooler and change the filter regularly.

Thanks again guys. I decided to have it towed to a shop and just have it done as my schedule is full and knowledge lacking. It will cost $807.59 for the whole deal. I should not complain as this is the first vehicle I’ve kept beyond the factory warranty. At 130k this is the first issue that I recall. It owes me nothing.
Gmtim its interesting what you said about just after getting gas. With the larger 34 gal tank I only had about 6 gal in when I filled it up and just then it happened. Here in Iowa it’s in the 20° F. So most likely the cold fuel put a hurting to it.

Your going to get it busted off if you buy pump from dealer. I would shop for a better price. I did my girlfriends brothers truck.2002 2500 pickup and delphi pump from napa was 320.00. Like posted above lift left side of bed and you can get right to retainer ring . if all bed bolts come right out you are looking at about 2 hours. I do them at work in about 45 mins just like the s-10 blazers lift body and sender is right there. That price is what shops charge .That is how the techs make their money charge 3.5 hours and then hit you the drain and fill of tank . and then they lift bed off and dont have to touch the gas. if you have 2 1/2 car garage try it yourself. good luck
