Plus, you really want the snow/rain. Rain/snow is the best way to compact the freshly disturbed ground. You could do all compaction with machines but it'll never beat Mother Nature.

This is very true if you can let it go through a freeze thaw cycle...
In his case if he cut right to subgrade, that is virgin soil and not disturbed.
Only when you have to make fill to meet grade would you have to worry about compaction.
You still need to test the virgin subgrade for the proposed load. And soil borings for type of soil in your subgrade.
Cant build on garbage...

I believe they are 4' for the garage and the house garage was 3' and was supposed to be 4', go figure. Here is a pic before they pour them plus you can see the new garage is a foot deeper. Weather here is just as shitty as Chicago!

I noticed you have 2x4 studs is the reason i ask, i wanted them taller but was told anything over 9' you have to use 2x6 and since mine is 16" on center the extra $ would be significant...

got to be a happy factor with the progress...when the trusses get flown into place in the am and the roof sheathing is done by the end of the day, the project really takes shape.

Its coming along. Roof is done shingles don't match for shit. I actually have new shingles from when the house was built in 2002 which match the new shingles on the new garage perfectly but are now WAY off from the color of the ones that have been on the house since 02. We have to re-shingle the area above the current garage which will end at the gable and you wont see the difference when its done just one more thing $$.

Siding windows doors and garage door were all delivered yesterday so the next set of pics it should look like a lot has been done. Also, mapped out the floor plan and hopefully starting on running the electrical this weekend.

If I were closer I would take you up on that. I have a herniated L5 but it’s been okay the past couple years till doing this floor and then doing medicine ball sit ups last night.

Back on topic, got windows and doors siding is going on. Starting electrical this weekend and floor should be poured first or second week in January. New Driveway wont be done till spring.

lol no kidding I dont think I have ever had a car or building project come in under budget!. It is a good thing my GC is a good firend though for the roof he is only charging me material costs to re-shingle the area up to the gable so the roof matches better.

It’s looking great and glad to see the weather is cooperating. It’s been raining here for days but I lucked out when I rented the scissor lift for the weekend. The rental company is closed till the second so I get to have it for a week at a one day price so I grabbed a skid steer as well.

I have been really busy with end of year stuff at work so there is a lot to update. The weather has been cooperative and they finished up the siding flashing and gutters yesterday. I will post some new pics later today the ones below are from Tuesday. The building is pretty much done at this point siding, gutters roof windows doorts etc. We even have most of the rough electric in and today getting started on the attic and putting a ceiling in along with a staircase to the attic. They fixed the mis-matched roof and stitched the brick in like suggested. The flashing and gutters dont match for shit but the siding was spot on.

A buddy of mine talked me into the radiant heat floor after he stopped by offered to help install it. It actually isn't that bad of a job and outside of the hot water tank I will have less than $1k into material to install it. We had to scrap the floor down another 1.5" which was done yesterday and we going to install the insulation board, wire mesh and pex this weekend. I will post pics of the floor installed before we pour the concrete. Which hopefully will be going in next week sometime.

I have a floor lay out dawn up that I have gone back and forth on where to put the lift. Initially I was going to put the new workbench cabinets along the back wall but now plan to move the lift as far as possible against the back wall and put the cabinets on the far right side wall which will open up parking space behind the lift. I had planned to purchase a big workbench cabinet set up from Saber but at this point I am down to re-purposing the shitty cabinets in my current garage and putting the killer workbench on hold. I have a SS counter top and cheap lowes cabinets in my garage that is in some of the previous pics. I am just going to clean them up and re-paint them for now.

I spent some time on the phone with Greg Smith Equipment and will probably be buying an Atlas lift from them. With the 11' ceiling I have to go with a base plate lift as opposed to the std lift that runs the hyd lines overhead. Most of those lifts are 145" in ht which I could install if I put it between the trusses and box out the dry wall. Atlas does have an overhead that is 11'6" but I would still need to box out the ceiling to make it fit. The baseplate on the floor is not really a big deal for me anyway if I were making a living with it tripping over the baseplate would be an issue but for working on toys and hot rods it seems it will be just a minor inconvenience?

What I have been more concerned about is asymmetrical vs symmetrical lifts. A baseplate lift has to have a symmetrical arm set up which can make getting in and out of the car a little more difficult and lifting trucks a little more complicated. I initially wanted a lift that is ALI certified and Atlas sells them both certified and un-certified. The non-certified lift is $900 cheaper and the guy at Greg Smith pretty much told me it is the same lift. Plus my buddy helping with the floor has the had same lift for over 10 years without any issues.

LMK if anyone has thoughts and opinions on the lift. I have to dig the location of the posts out this weekend and will be installing the pex and heat zones around where the lift posts will be installed.

It looking great so far! Feels good to be getting close. We’ve had terrible weather down here the last week and the humidity flooded the shop. Finally got that under control with a dehumidifier and getting the ac and heat installed this weekend along with the air lines.

great progress. I have heard people rave about the in-floor heat as well, should work out very well.
I have a floor-plate lift and do not find the plate to be a big deal (probably not using it as much for "work" as most others, but it does what I needed).
Good luck finishing up.
