Has anyone experimented with using a lower (numericly) gear ratio .. I am considering changing to a 3.23 or maybe even a 3.08.

Gene,

Yea the 3:42 does work very well. The problem I have is that with 26" tires the engine is bouncing off the rev limiter before I reach the traps. The other thing is that with the more torque the engine makes the less gear it needs ... I am curious if anyone has gone quicker by going to a 3:23. The car is primarily a street car and I want it to be able to run close to the same be it either track or street all the while remaining very much stock looking. (retaining factory wheels and tire sizes)

The 3:42 is the perfect gear ratio for a TR. It works well with the 26" tires too. The TR Limited came with the 3:08 ratio though. ............ Gene

The few Limited turbo Regals I have worked on, and the one I owned, all had 3.42 gears. Never seen or heard of a 3.08 in a Buick turbo car?????????????

Just for reference, my buddy bought his GN with a 7.5" rear and 2.73 gears (had been wrecked in the rear) and it went 7's in the 1/8 before we exploded the rear...so the answer to your question is yes it should run pretty good with 3.23's but would I do it?? No way, I'm gonna run 28" tall tires and forget about it.

What RPM does your engine trap?

Gene, the rev limiter is set at 5400rpms. The engine starts bouncing off it right as I approach the traps. 5400 is good place for it too, considering I am still running a stock cam. Power starts to drop off when the engine goes above 5000.

I too would recommend running a larger 28” tire. If you just refuse to for whatever reason, you may want to try shifting into OD to lower your trap RPM.

FWIW & IMHO:
I have had 4 '86-'87 TR'S & 1 '87 GN: 2 of the TR'S are
LTD'S. 1 I just sold and 1 I have now. Both have/are 3:42's
The other 3 cars, 1 '87 Gn, 1 '86 TR, & 1 '87 TR all had 3:42's.
I believe that the sales brochure that you are refering to was for both the TR'S & non-TR'S. All '86-'87's TR'S were 3:42 out of the factory. The non-turbo motored T-Type, LTD'S or otherwise, came with, or could have been had with the 3:08's maybe, but not the TR'S. At least that's my story, and I am sticking to it.

It would be interesting to see the window sticker and the trunk option list. Is the current owner the original owner? How about posting a copy of the window sticker, I am curious how they identified the 3.08 gear ratio on the window sticker and trunk option sticker. What other special parts not the norm? This is starting to sound like dealer options & installations to me. I have heard that some moon roofs were dealer installed.

What a funny thing that I saw this thread. I just finished installing a set of 3.23's in my GN. I heard that the Car will go faster. I don't doubt it.
