*note to the mods. if you see fit move this to the lounge*

i have a 79 chevy 3/4 ton 4wd truck with a perdy well built 350 sbc/ th400/np205 trans case. well this weekend i decided to take a look at what i thought was a leaky valve cover but as it turned out it seems to be tranny fluid. the tranny was due for a new filter and fluid so i changed those. the fluid is still bright and did not smell burnt at all. no leaks from the pan gasket.

while filling the tranny i noticed a LARGE amount of tranny fluid coming from some place (not the fill tube). its seems to be on the side of the tranny above the starter. if you are familar with how the 73 to 87 chevy 4wd trucks are set up there is a strut/brace that runs from the side of the block at an angle down to the tansfer case girdle/skid plate (i will take a picture if that helps decribe it better). the fluid seems to be leaking on to there. there is a tranny cooler and i have not looked in to great depth on those yes but i dont see them leaking like that while just filling the tranny.

could this be the front pump seal? any help would be very much helpful i am gunna drop it off friday at a local shop and have them look at it.

if you need any more details let me know

I would get a couple of cans of Brake-Clean, clean the area thoroughly and look again.

If it leaks while you are pouring it in, it is likely an external seal, not a pressure related leak.

yea i did that only i used a pressure washer :)

i cant really see it due to the starter being in the way. i am thinking i will take the easy way out and take it to a local guy i know and have him look at it.

thanks though

Dathan, check for a crack in the fill tube. Especially in the area where the tab for the fill tube bolts to the block. Also check the grommet where the fill tube goes into the trans body. Both are common problems for the leak while adding fluid. Hope that helps. Let us know. Mark :D

fill tube looks dry i will look at it agian ( i will remove it this time)... its coming from above the starter. and the fill tube is lower then that. i will look in to it more. and post back the results. the tranny shifts strong and firm its just more annoying then any thing else!

thanks Mark!

Dathan

Did you check the tranny lines? I had a pin hole leak there from the lines rubbing the block.
