So I'm looking to get either a te44 or a ta49 and I've been told I need a stall converter to match. Everytime I look, this ones 3200, this ones 10.5 inch. I have no idea what I'm looking for, every muscle car I've owned has been manual. Insight much appreciated.

10.5" is the size of the converter itself, 3200 is the advertised stall speed.

Two things effect stall speed, weight and torque. Aslo the smaller the unit the faster it can spin and allows for more slip.

breif explanation on how your tq converter works.

Most basic is the 12" with 2800 stall. That combo of turbo/converter has been around for years and works good. I have a Pat's 12" and it works fine for me. From there you can get more exotic sizes, styles and stalls to match larger turbos.

I am like Wiskey GN, I was looking at upgrading to a te-60 and can I still use my 2500 stall? Hope Not to steal your thread sir

thanks guys Kevin

The TA49 will spool with a stock convertor with the stock turbine housing.

The TE44 will be laggy in comparison.

A convertor will make the boost response faster on both on launch. If going with a lockup conv keep it around 2600 for good slip %.

Also, looser convertor will not allow higher boost launches and will also make traction harder as the boost response is going to be better.
2800 and higher stall it needs to be a NON lockup.

I say try the stock convertor with the TA49 and a 2600 10" PTC lockup with the TE44. Dont force the TCC locked at WOT with any convertor.

With either turbo on a bone stock car in perfect running condition with good valve springs, fuel and alky with a TT tweak chip burned for 24 psi and running 24 psi. With a 1.7 60' the car will run mid 12's very easily in 80 plus degree weather.

I went off the deep end on answering lol... HTH

The 44 and 49 spool exactly the same if they have the same ex housing.

Thank you, it is the same turbo except the compressor housing.
