Think twice before buying a Chevy truck I am finding out. I bought a new Z71 Silverado in 2004 with an additional 6yr/100k mile warranty. The truck just turned 76k miles. Every since I bought the truck I have had trouble with the speedometer needle randomly ticking. After twice having service techs look at it back in 2004 they just said to monitor it since it seemd inconsequential to them. Well, there is a recent service bulletin about problems with these 2003 and 2004 dash clusters regarding the speedometers breaking. I found this out because a month ago my speedometer let loose and is now usually pinned at 120mph even when parked. The problem is....GM now says it's MY problem to fix because they will only fix it if the truck has under 70k miles, regardless of the fact that the truck had been in for this problem from the beginning. All I can say is this, I am 41 and have owned many vehicles (some of which had over 200k miles on them) and I have never had a speedometer broken and this one has been basically since new. If GM won't take care of a known defective dash cluster from new....how will they handle other more important aspects of there vehicles. I have been looking at new trucks for the past 2 months or so. This seals my decision.....it is getting traded in with the broken since new speedometer on a Tundra and I am recommending steering clear of GM. My customer service guy was Kevin Green at 866-790-5600 ext 31917.

I am a GM tech and we are doing alot of these clusters. The warranty should cover it, but if you are going to keep it PM me and I maybe able to help. Sorry you hate you truck over a dealership.

The dealership has been great. This is GM National Customer Service denying me the fix.

My warranty has a $250 dollar deductible and will cover it.....but why should I have to pay the $250 on a problem most everyone else is getting fixed for free...the way it should be. I want to reiterate....this has been an issue SINCE NEW. They just didn't know the dash clusters were defective back then.

I'm an ex-GM service tech, let me tell you some inside knowledge. EVERY dealership is trying to save money.
next time you have any issue, and even if the tech cannot "duplicate" the problem, get it in writing ( receipt even if the service was free) that way if the problem is worse later, you can provide the document of the problem that existed before the "warranty". ran out and it was not resolved then.MAKE SURE THE SERVICE WRITER PUTS THE COMPLAINT IN DETAIL ON THE TICKET.

also, Toyota is not all its hyped up to be either,i just replaced an engine in my mother in laws Toyota truck with only 39k miles, tried to get some kind of help from toyota ( warrant was 36k and she complained of the knock before, but no proof in writing)and was laughed at..... i will push my GM before ever buying any foreign car/truck........

EDIT, HER TRUCK ONLY HAD 36,900 MILES, NOT 39K

Toyota just has better PR.

They (Toyota) recalled more vehicles last year than they produced! I live inside the great Toyota family and can tell you that quality is going downhill, quick. They want to be #1 so bad that they have killed the Camry in process. They new Camrys will be worth squat because of the transmissions problems they are having. They tell you they are number one in quality, they really don't prove it anymore. Just another auto manufacturer... I think I would buy a Ford truck before putting money into a new Tundra.

I went round and round with a local Chevy dealer when my S10 was having problems. They told me to take it to the dealer I bought it from. I looked at the service manager and asked him why, he told me that's the only way it would get fixed. I said great, I bought it here and you have to fix the problem (broken pressure plate) he got mad and stormed into his office. I called GM and he called my house an hour later asking me to stop calling GM and he would be glad to fix my problem. They are all working to save money. Call around, you may get a better dealer out of it.

I will push my GM before ever buying any foreign car/truck........

Gary............we must have the same bloodline. Seems like 95% of the cars on the road are foreign. Hmmm, guess we can add that to the reason why our economy is in the tanks.......

Instead of buying a Toyota s**t box, you'd be better off with a nice Ford F150!...They're the best!

cool. i read a bumper sticker once, and it read; YOUR FOREIGN CAR IS CLASHING WITH YOUR AMERICAN FLAG:eek:

I thought it hit the nail on the head.

I think the dealers have a lot to do with what people buy. When I bought my Cruiser, the dodge dealer I bought it from treated me great till it started having problems out of warranty. And one of the service writers is a PT owner and club member!
Well, I took my business elsewhere, and so far, the other dealer I have gone to has been great. Granted, I fix most everything I can on my own, but for dealer parts and stuff, they have been great. Even directed me to a salvage yard for some parts off recent wrecks they sent there, instead of pushing the new expensive dealer parts.

Like was said before, anything questionable, get in writing. I took my PT in just before the warranty ran out for a wheel bearing issue, which they tried to tell me was bad tires. I replaced the tires later on, but found out the bearing was shot when an independent shop did an inspection. I got the bearing replaced at the shop, but later on found out that the dealer should have done the work since the complaint was documented in writing before the warranty ran out. But, considering my deductible, it was done just as cheap at the other shop anyway.

My friend has worked at a ton of dealerships, and he can certainly tell you about them wanting to save every penny.

Many of my vehicals are straight from Japan. I dont buy American crap anymore because I value my dollar. Buy a Toyota before the American workers completely ruin them too! This can get policical, but I am all for getting the best for your money.

nevermind, im not going to get started. just dont get hit by the raggedy gm trucks in your tin can......

might want to do some research on the toyota trucks. They're having some major problems!!! Might also want to view the videos on you tube showing structural strength of the toyota vs US built trucks. The tundra is a tin can.

I personally have a '97 F250HD Powerstroke (old body style) but this sums it up all with the Toyota.

And Ted as I told you before, buy a CREW CAB:rolleyes:

my 2 cents

my 2004 silverado ,purchased new,had the cluster replaced free with 38kand when i traded it in in December for a new Trailblazer it had 70k on it with original, brakes, battery, and the drivetrain untouched....in fact other than oil and air filters i did nothing to that truck.....i wont but anthing but GM....
just my 2 cents.....

I don't get how most of you think it's the dealership that is eating warranty repairs. If the vehicle is under warranty then the bill gets submitted to the manufacturer for re-imbursment.

If it's an in house extended then the dealer pays.

No dealer will pay if he can't recoup the cost.

Some of you need to get over this narrow minded thinking.

Where did your T.V. , clothes, toaster, ect... come from?

It's ok to buy a Toshiba but not a Toyota?

How about a Mexican built F-150? Is that ok senoir?

Totota doesn't make TVs.

And there is a Ford truck plant in Louisville, KY ;)

TRUST ME!!!! I live in the Toyota family, they know how to hide things that the public would be shocked if they knew of the quality issues at hand. I have never seen any business act so arrogant as I do when dealing with Toyota employees or suppliers for them. They act there is not a single flaw in any production method they have or the vehicles they put out. Do you really think every car waiting at a Toyota service department is there for an oil change?????

Toyota Agrees to Sludge Settlement for Consumers
This is what ate the engine in my Camry. The problem really goes back to the V6 engine made in '88!!!! Now that's a problem.

+ The new Tundra suspension problems and early model camshaft failure.
+ The Camry transmissions that fail left and right on those cars. I know three people who work at the TTMK Georgetown plant. All of them bought new Camrys when they first came out with the *new* model. every one of those three cars has had the transmission fail, two out of warranty with no help from Toyota. The part is $1900 from the dealer and currently on backorder.

Don't get me wrong, they are fair cars, but times are changing again in the auto world. I see Detroit coming back around with higher quality vehicles that really put a dent in foreign car sales.

If you want a real Japanese car you can be happy with, Buy a Honda!!!!
