Got a tooth pulled

Went to the oral surgeon today and had a tooth pulled. I was nervous for 4 days after I made the appointment. From the time I sat in the chair up to this minute, I felt no discomfort. When he told me the tooth was out, I couldn't believe it. I was gripping the armrests so tight my hands were sore. When I was a kid and went to the dentist, it was awful - ouch. Dentistry has come a long way.
My son is in dental school. I was scared, but I wanted to be a good dad, so I asked him if he wanted to pull the tooth. He told me he was booked for the next 3 weeks. They can't book their own appointments in school. I acted disappointed but I was glad.
I'm considering going with a dental implant. Anyone have any experience with them?

i had a implant and almost went insane when it prevented my teeth from approximating by about 1/8". i was scheduled for emergency replacement because i couldnt sleep or even concentrate. it is a very difficult experience to describe, but my dentist almost lost his teeth that night.

people like brer rabbit wouldnt even notice if they couldnt close their mouth all the way, but for me it was unbearable.

Just getthe Nitrous when getten a tooth pulled. Free high. I actually had to have one removed due to one being cracked while filling a cavity. The implants will run you between $1500-2000. They aint cheap.

You're lucky Chris. I had one pulled a couple of years ago and it hurt like a MF. I had to come back twice because the b!tch couldn't pull it easily. I was numed for hours after wards and got dry socket. I hope you have more luck than I did.

Great! That's not what I was hoping to hear. Was you're guy a dentist or an oral surgeon. My son tells me it makes a big difference.

How about you? Was she a dentist or an oral surgeon? Most dentists, nowadays, won't even pull teeth. As I said, I think there's a big difference. Dentists can do pretty much anything they want to do, but they aren't trained specifically to do extractions or implants.

Dentist Chris. I live in a small town and there's no such thing as an oral surgeon here.

I had my molars pulled in TJ mexico. Also had a couple fillings there to. Still have them no issues. My last year in the Army I had all 4 wisdom teeth pulled. It was free so why not. I didn't even know what happened. All I remember was getting an IV on the top of my hand and then I was back at my apartment. Got some good vicodin and was really hungry for the next three days. I lost ten pounds on the jello and soft food diet.

Got the IV treatment when I had a wisdom tooth pulled. Was nice totally checking out for a while. No dreaming, etc. just blank. Oral surgeon did mine.

I just got a local anesthetic and I didn't feel anything at all. He rubbed some foul-smelling stuff on my gums for a minute or two and I didn't even feel the shoots.

I'm a 26 year Certified Dental Technician (I make gold teeth). Having a tooth pulled should be done by an oral surgeon unless it's just flapping in the breeze. There are a few problems that can happen if a less experienced dentist operates. The nerves run in certain areas that can be crushed when a tooth is pulled. If there is nerve damage you can have permanent numbness. Much also depends on what is left of the tooth. If it has to be sectioned or dug out there could more damage to surounding tissue which of course will cause more post-op pain. If you loose the "scab" over the hole in the bone you can get a dry socket which is painful.

Implants are great when done correctly. We routinly do them and have a very high success rate. The big issue with them is patient selection. You need the proper room and bone. Some bone can be built up with freeze dried bone. Placement done nowdays is much less surgically involved. In the past they had to do a flap and drill the bone, now they just use a tissue punch and drill down. There are designing software and jigs that make placement very precise which for me doing the restoration is very important. If the implant is not placed in a normal postion, the restoration I make can be all distorted looking or not direct forceds down the implant correctly which could cause it to break or pack food down the tissue and fail. Dr Boost, I don't know what your problem was; the abutment might not have been seated fully in the implant, the models might have been distorted or the bite was off. You never should have been sent home after seating the restoration if it was that high. A high occlusion can be very annoying and do damage to your other teeth and gums and bone.
Implants can anchor dentures which for someone with low ridges can make wearing a denture way better. They can also take the place of a bridge which can make the restoration easier to clean and look more individual. One thing about implants though, there is no nerve in them so you don't feel the same sensations like you do with natural teeth.

That's like cutting off your foot because you have athlete's foot... Once gone nothing can replace them that is as good. Aside from being the begining of your digestive system, your mouth is also the first line of defense against disease. If it's compromised, your body is always spending energy to stop further infection. That continual drain can lead to other infections or disease in other parts of the body, like being outflanked in a battle.

I have had a tooth pulled as well as an implant. I had a great experience from start to finish. It took over a year to complete. It wasn't cheap, but you can not tell the difference at all.

If you don't mind my asking, what did you end up paying for the implant? My son tells me that $3000 is about the average around here.

Travel and go to an Oral Surgeon to get teeth pulled. I had all 4 wisdom and 1 molar pulled at the same time. I have a fear of getting put under so I was awake for the whole thing, kind of fun hearing him count how many are pulled out.

I just worked a convention of dentistry Implant companies and wow are there alot to choose from. The technology has come along way but walking through the exhibits and watching the videos of the procedure is too much for me. I need 2 implants and after the videos can't convince myself to go through with it. You have to do your homework to make sure you get the right one.
