I pulled my pan during my converter swap to install a deep pan with rear pickup. I have only 2000 miles on my tranny. The fluid was bright red and smelled good. There was some gray silt on the bottom of the pan and a few areas with a little build up that I could scratch with my finger. Is this normal or do I have an band/clutch problem? I restalled my converter from a 3200 to a 2800 because of a low rpm drop between shifts and very low mph. I just dont want to reinstall the tranny if it needs work.

Give me a break Damon. My teacher told me in fifth grade thee are no dumb questions.:D

I just wanted to make sure...

so, what's the verdict? are there any dumb questions?

and yes, it looks normal to me. i've seen perfectly operating trannies that had a hell of a lot more crud than that in the pan, and i've seen some run forever after seeing that much crud in the pan after a fluid/filter change. if thee isn't already one in there, put a strong magnet in the pan to catch the metallic stuff, and add a drain plug to make it easier next time you pull the pan.
i think i'd be more worried if there wasn't anything in the bottom of the pan..

She should have taught you how to spell!:D :D :D :D :D :D :D

I thought you were my friend....:frown:

You can thank the public school systems around here for my grammar.;)

Anyway its in...took it around the block and shifts good. I will do some test n tune this week and let you know whats up with it.

My pan had a drain plug. While I had the tranny out for the converter swap I put it on my engine stand to install the new deep pan and pickup. That new pan is huge and it hangs low.. I hope no small animals run under my car while I am going down the road. :D Thanks for your input.

Ed, aka Worry Wart, (too funny)
Put her back together.
It is normal to get some sludge in there. It is never a bad ideal to do a reclean on the pan after 500-1000 miles to get that stuff out of there.
Between changing a few converters:eek: and new trans, you are fine.
Metal is the real issue if you have flakes in there. Which it just looks like clutch soot.

Thanks Brian. I didnt want to post that you buiilt the tranny till I found out everything was okay.:D

I will check it out again when I do my next few converter swaps... ;)

For the people who dont me I thought I would introduce myself.

I am a married white male who loves Turbo regals. Hobbies include: Worrying about every single tiny problem with my car including: dirty tranny pans and also if my gas gauge is correct down to the ounce. I love doing converter swaps on weekends just to use my air compressor. I enjoy quiet times in my garage diagnosing "No start" situations. I alsd rite esays on gramar and speling as a part time jobe.

Dumb questions are just a past time I wouldnt consider it being a hobby.:D

Nothing wrong with being anal. Dosen't mean I can't give you a hard time though.

Ed, enjoy your stay at work while me and Brian hang out in BG. Oh and get ready to see what a 6776 is really capable of.

This is too funny!

I am doing research and came across this thread. Not trying to bring a thread back to life but merely acknowledging how funny this is and how it reminds me of myself at times at when i am being meticulous!

it's your t.c. you need to take care of that asap or it will cause your valves to stick,,,, and at that point you can kiss your tranny good bye... good luck my friend
