I pulled my pan during my converter swap to install a deep pan with rear pickup. I have only 2000 miles on my tranny. The fluid was bright red and smelled good. There was some gray silt on the bottom of the pan and a few areas with a little build up that I could scratch with my finger. Is this normal or do I have an band/clutch problem? I restalled my converter from a 3200 to a 2800 because of a low rpm drop between shifts and very low mph. I just dont want to reinstall the tranny if it needs work.

so, what's the verdict? are there any dumb questions?
and yes, it looks normal to me. i've seen perfectly operating trannies that had a hell of a lot more crud than that in the pan, and i've seen some run forever after seeing that much crud in the pan after a fluid/filter change. if thee isn't already one in there, put a strong magnet in the pan to catch the metallic stuff, and add a drain plug to make it easier next time you pull the pan.
i think i'd be more worried if there wasn't anything in the bottom of the pan..

Anyway its in...took it around the block and shifts good. I will do some test n tune this week and let you know whats up with it.

Put her back together.
It is normal to get some sludge in there. It is never a bad ideal to do a reclean on the pan after 500-1000 miles to get that stuff out of there.
Between changing a few converters
and new trans, you are fine.Metal is the real issue if you have flakes in there. Which it just looks like clutch soot.
