Guantanamo Bay Inmates moving an hour away from me?

The Big Question: Will taking Guantanamo Bay inmates to Illinois resolve their legal status? - Americas, World - The Independent

I know you guys have probably heard of this move. Not trying to get political here but.......How would you guys feel if you had all of these inmates moving an hour, actually 45 minutes from where you lived?

The Thompson Prison was built about 9 years ago and has remained empty since it was built. My local electrical union did the work on this prison and although I wasnt there for the build, I did stop by quite a few times during the build. It's an amazing place to say the least. The town of Thompson, prior to the prison, had prety much nothing except for their Watermelon Festival. People invested in new hotels, gas stations, restaraunts, etc only to lose their businesses because the prison never opened. I feel it would have been a good thing for the town if it had opened but it never did.

However, I really hope we dont have a bunch of terrorists housed there. I'm not real comfortable with the type of inmates they want to bring in. Do you think it will bring problems to the surrounding areas? My area is pretty much the largest metro area close to the prison. What kind of people will be visiting?

How would you guys feel about having this in your backyard?

I wouldnt have any worries about safety. The sad part is that they dont want to train local people to work there, they want to bring in employee's from elseware. Wouldnt it be nice to give 300 jobs to that area? Not much going on for those locals.

It's a shame that the state of IL is so broke that they have to put IL (and IA) residents at risk of a terrorist attack. I'm not concerned about them getting out, but I would be concerned about who might visit or what type of BS might be pulled by sympathizers of these fools. Hey, I bet this will do wonders for your real estate values too!

Maybe the IL electorate will stop voting in crooks err....liberal democrats that are incapable of running a state with a balanced budget. Until that changes, you can bet they'll remain on the federal governments dole!

Actually there are two BIG PROBLEMS within 45 minutes of Thompson. If you head south out of Thompson, stay on the same road, you pass by Cordova Nuclear Plant within 30 minutes. Keep driving on the same road and it will take you straight to the Rock Island Arsenal at the 45 minute mark. The Arsenal is where my company does most of our business. I believe the Arsenal is very high on the list for possible terror threats. This is not cool. Why on Earth would they want to bring these guys to the States anyways? Just to be able to try them in a Federal Court? When they are found guilty, does Illinois have the rigth to execute? Or is that a goverment jurisdiction to be able to execute? Or will they be able to execute them at all, leving them to sit and watch TV and eat good meals for the rest of their lives?

I can see the nuke plant from my front window, I assume its been a target long before the prison debate began. I really dont see why having these guys here makes any difference as far as an attack goes. I'm sure they know exactly where all the targets are in our country that would do the most damage to us. The broke state of Il. needs the cash, thats why their selling the prison to the feds. thats the bottom line. If you live your life "affraid" of a terrorist attack, than they"ve already succeeded. Just one mans opinion.

I'm definately not living my life in "fear." If you knew me a little better, you'd know I'm crazy enough that I'll definately die long before a terrorist attack. But..... what other problems will come with this move? What kind of people will it bring to the area? I also dont feel comfortable becuase of the Nuc. and the Arsenal. It's an awesome place to work. I can honestly say I love my job. It's a cool thing to be able to have to do work in high security areas that have thousands of lasers protecting the room you are in! There is a TON of history in this area and the Arsenal pretty much sums it up. The museum is the largest storage place for old military weapons! VERY COOL!

But, are these two key places going to get more attentionif this move happens? I could care less about how much money Illinois has. If my family gets killed by some wacko whos visiting the area, that;s what I'd be worried about.

To me, the world is changing rapidly in the wrong direction. People care more about money, religion, and power than they do their neighbor. Ruthless crimes are becoming more abundant. I just feel that we need to keep these people out.

And yes, if it were up to me, I'd be capping off all of the scumbags long before they ever thought about bringing them here. I never did understand why they let these people live so long.

I assume you are talking about Byron? Cordova is just down the road from Thompson. Byron is a quite a ways from here.

I will point out that one of the 911 terorists was placed in a normal detention prison and attacked his guard trying to get out. Place this many in the same location and you will have a disaster wating to happen. the reason this is happening is because of the idiot in charge and the broke yankee area. (No offense ment BTW) The northern states are having a rough time because of the economy created by their voting habits. And once again, thats another great idea. Let Bubba deal with them. I'd feel more protected to assort them out into many different prisons with other killers, gang thugs, etc. It's kind of like a guy that rapes a child, they dont last long in prison. I dont think these scumbags would either.
