I was thinking about gutting my catalytic converter, I've hear various things about it though, usually i would think it increases flow increasing performance, but i've been told its not worth it by a few people aswell and if i really want better flow to get a high flow cat. My car is old enough so that it doesn't require emission testing where i live, so the cat really isn't necessary for me.

if its legal to loose it loose it.
Exhaust back pressure is not you friend

Well I kinda agree with you David. Get one of the spun metalic convertors and it won't be an issue. You may not have testing because of age but remember that what you do today will effect your children later. Not a really PC kinda guy but I do try to keep things clean for later.

I have tried it few different ways with high flow cats ,with out it ,gutted cat and with 2 different mufflers in place of a cat and so on ,straight through muffler did best but is lauder then high flow cat , spiral muffler is like high flow cat when it comes to noise level but killed performance a bit , so......... high flow cat was better then stock but.... no converter or gutted converter was best performance /spool up but got very laud ,too much noise for me , putting race muffler in place of cat did the best , now this was done on my car with a lot of upgrades you say... mostly stock... :rolleyes:so if you like it queit go for high flow cat or spiral muffler ( I got one for sale it happens ), if you ok with little bit more noise ,go with 3 muffler system and straight race muffler , gutting it on mostly stock car will give mostly NOISE

do you still have the stock exhaust behind the cat?

I think the problem with just gutting them is the air goes from a small inlet...bounces around inside the much larger hollow cat...and has to find its way back out the small outlet.

I would think if you gut it you should put a straight pipe inside. It will look like you have a cat...but it will be a straight pipe.
