Hey all,

Have any of you had good luck fitting the larger group size Odyssey 34/78 battery in the stock location?

My car is stored most of the year so I want to try one of these Odysseys. It is also currently 1,000 miles away, so I can't measure right now :(

While obviously their stock 75 group size battery should fit fine (75-PC1230, 760 CCA, 110 RC) Id like to install the higher 850 CCA battery (34-78PC1500DT-A) if possible.

Odyssey's 34/78 is said to be 8/10ths of an inch bigger in length than my current 10-inch long yellow top (Odyssey is 10.85 inches in length), which if I remember correctly was a bit of a tight fit.

As my vehicle is currently 1,000 miles away, do any of you know the max amount of room, length-wise, that we can fit a battery?

should fit, but your battery hold down probably won't fit..

best batter you can buy.. look at the sears platinum.. it's the same battery but slightly cheaper.

I have the odyssey in my gmc sierra.

Thanks Eticket.

I've seen the Platinum, but not fully convinced they are exactly the same even though Sears calls them "rebadged Odysseys."

It is a pretty significant price difference between the two: 60-80 bucks usually. Makes me wonder what is different.

How long have you had the Odyssey? Happy with it?

They are definitely an odyssey.. Now that I have one, i would not ever buy anything else. So much power in cranking amps.

Forget those crappy optima's too. waste $ for a POS battery. I have friends in the mobile power systems business. They've tested every battery you can think of.

Appreciate it! I've got a note into Odyssey's tech dept. about sizing, as it is narrower at bottom and goes wider toward the top, maybe it'll fit easier than I'd hoped.

Either way gonna be a hardcore battery in that bad boy.

Got this back next day from Odyssey:

The 34/78-PC1500DT is 10 inches in length at the base and has the front and back hold down ledges the same as the Group 75.

Thank you for contacting EnerSys/ODYSSEY. Sincerely,

So their 34/78 is 10 in at bottom and 10.8 up top.

For a battery that is taller than stock, if you take off the nubs at the bottom of the battery tray with a dremel, then you can still use the stock hold down.

For Odyssey Stock replacement 75-PC1230-A weighs 45 lbs.
the 34-78-PC1500DT-A is 49 lbs.

Haven't decided on which size yet as I won't be storing it as long now.

I put a 78 series optima in my GN. Just cut the nub off of the battery tray area and it should fit fine. The optima was not as tall as the 75 series battery so the hold down did not securely hold the battery. I found an adjustable hold down bar at pep boys or autozone and it fit perfectly underneath to take up the clearance. I would also go for the bigger battery f you don't mind the weight. You will get a lot further when and if your alternator quits. The RC on the 78 series is an additional 25 minutes.

For those that don't know that are reading the thread RC is a length in time that a battery can stay above 10.5 volts for with a 25 amp load. Essentially in my mind it is the drive time you have left in minutes with everything you can have switched off. :)

Finally got the chance to measure: 87 TR's battery tray is 11 inches wide.

With my Yellow Top in there's still around 3/4 inch of room, so I think the Odyssey 34 78 will work after all.
