Hey guys, i just got home from the hospital after a car accident which left my 87 GN destroyed...I'm a little beside myself right now, i know that the most important thing is that me and my friend are alright but the amount of time, energy, and money I've been putting into that car not to mention the love i have for the car (which was my first car) really has me distraught. I came on here to ask what the insurance company would value an 87 gn at, im sure not enough to bring it back from the dead, but hopefully enough to get me started on it. I will do anything i can to get my car back on the road i just want to know how far away i am from doing that, money wise.

And i know you're all going to ask me, so here it is:

I was with my friend in the left turning lane of a pretty busy road. The light was red, we were stopped waiting at it, the left turning arrow turned green, i started to make a left, and some CUNT blew a red light on the opposite side of the road and smashed into us pretty much head on, she was in an SUV so the undercarriage took most of the damage on her car, leaving my GN's nose crunched pretty much up to my windshield. She must have been going at least 50 because the damage was really bad, not to mention my car's solid steel and she was in a newer SUV that would have been plastic. Im guessing that my car crunched on contact with the steel frame under the body of her truck but idk...so we both got out of the car and walked away (me and my friend) since my car's passanger cabin did hold up, the other driver was also fine, and when i walked over and asked if she was ok she had some story how she was rushing to get her husband and she was on the phone right after the accident so i think she was on it while it happened also...and so we get to the hospital (precautionary) and there we hear the lady claiming that she had a green light to go straight which is impossible. I think shes claiming some bogus injuries too...we'll see what happens...

But as of right now, my car is destroyed and idk where to even start with it, if it'll even be possible or if my parents will even allow it...what do you guys think? Thanks.

Wow....I'm glad you guys are ok. That's some scary stuff.

If you were in a new "muscle car" we wouldn't be having this conversation right now.

i hope you made sure you have it in your version of the police report exactly what happened to the t(that she said she was on the phone, in a rush.). it sounds like she is going to try and put this on you. try and post some pics if you can so people on hear can get a look at what, if anything can be done to fix it. sorry to hear about this

Sounds too similar to my first accident, it didn't involve a Buick but I was sitting in the intersection waiting to make a left turn, light turned yellow and then red, oncoming traffic stopped for the light, I go make my turn and someone runs the light and slams my right front corner.

I remember the guy had a big tray of food in his back seat and a cake or something like he was rushing to get to a party, but ended up being my fault for "failure to yield". Hopefully you have better luck because your intersection had a turn arrow.

Hopefully you know the exact time of the crash, tell the court to check her cell phone records and see if she was on the phone at the time.

First off sorry to hear of your loss.

At this point, it's probably best to let the dust settle. Let the insurance co. decide if it's going to be written off as a total or not.

If it is, make sure you get out of it what it's worth aka the book value. They will low ball you. Trust me.

Then see how much they'll sell it back to you for. If it's cheap enough and the parents will allow it, I'd buy it back and find you another GN that needs an engine....and use yours as a donor.

If the parents won't allow it, then save up and buy another when you can afford it.

How old are you? When I lived with my mom and dad, wasn't any way in hell they'd let me drive around in any kind of a high performance car.

If you had a green arrow, then she should not have blown thru and nailed you. But how many witnesses said she had the green light?

Im 17...and she was the only one who said she had a green light...its like there was nobody else there, even though the street was full of cars...im shocked at how few people actually stopped to help, only 2 guys ran up to us and they were sitting in the parking lot of walgreens which is on the corner...all of the cars started to just drive around the accident like nothing happened...and it was really bad, like if i saw what what happened to my car on the street id think the people inside were dead. the thing that bothered me even more was that the EMT's were cracking jokes about it in the ambulance on the way to the hospital...they were like oh wow a grand national thats a nice car, you wanna sell me one? and all this nonsense...but i digress...

i don't even know what condition my engine is in, i didnt get a chance to take a look at it yet...hopefully its still running, same with the turbo, if not, idk what im going to do...probably a lucky day for you guys cuz ill be parting out whatevers left on my car that can still be used.

Sorry to hear that. I feel for you, two days from now is the 1st anniversary of the death of my 86 GN. Get all the info you need about the value of your car, maybe get a lawyer. I did that right away because i knew i would get lowballed. It took me almost 6 months, but i got what i wanted for my car. Glad to hear you walked away with your buddy.
On a side note, my car was rear ended and i do have some front end body parts. Hopefully the frame wasnt too badly damaged, or if you are lucky not at all since the SUV should have gone right over it.

btw, does anyone know what the book value is on these cars? I looked on kelly blue book but it only goes back to 1989...

NADA has a classic section on their website. What insurance compnay do you have? If you dont mind me asking.

First think todo is get a your insurance agent or a lawyer to see if she was on the phone when the accident happened, next check security footage from walgreens or any other place around that might have footage of the accident,
since she was driving a newer SUV her computer will have how fast she was going when she hit you if her airbags deployed. If you have put alot of money and time in it did you keep the receipts. I hope this may help you.

no matter what the insurance says, keep the car (you will have to pay/or take less to keep it)...you never know, you might be able to repair one day,or keep to use for parts......

i have state farm insurance, and i only have 2 pics of my car, taken about 2 days ago (of the front and back) after i painted a racing stripe on it (the paint wasn't in any mint condition and i was going to have it repainted eventually anyway)

there she is...ill post some after pictures later today...if the auto collision place is open when my dad gets home...im pretty sure you can click on those pics and they open in a diff window bigger? if not ill try to get them on here larger...

First, consult a lawyer. It may cost you some but trust me, it will be better for you in the long run. I'm not advocating trying to take the woman to the cleaners but a lawyer will help ensure you get a fair settlement based on what the law allows. Trying to be a nice guy and keep the lawyers out of it always plays into the favor of the insurance company. You have a witness to back up your side of the story. You both went to the hospital so you should be entitled to an amout for sufferage and if you can prove that she was on the phone then you have a decent chance of atleast getting enough to repair or replace your car without having to come out of your own pocket to cover the cost.
Unless you have had an appraisal done on your car you can bet with the damage you are describing that they will total it and it will be her insurance not yours that is trying to make that decision. The big thing will not be the sheet metal though. It will be the frame and under body that you will have to consider the damage to before you can decide if the car is repairable or not.

First of all you need to be thankful you're still around.

Second, you need to get off of the computer and start flipping through the yellow pages for a good lawyer.

You're 17. You're automatically guilty of something. At least that's what this woman thinks and probably what the officers and insurance company are going to think. Make sure you have all your facts straight and a copy of the police report, the medical paperwork, your insurance paperwork and maybe even your friend on standby incase he is required to make a statement. Call a Lawyer right now and DO NOT talk about this to any insurance company until you do so.

Most car accident claims are taken on a contingency basis. That means you don't pay unless you win and if you win, the attorney gets his fee from there. Nevertheless, you will need your parents to become involved in this since you are a minor. I cannot say whether you have a case or not but it's a good idea to get some legal representation asap.

Good Luck.
