HDMI cable VS Component cable

Will be getting my HD converter box soon. The rep told me that they will give me some component video cables. She said the quality will be the very similar to the HDMI cable. Is this true?

HDMI vs Component Cables

It depends on if all the equipment will support HDMI, which is the newer technology and carries both the audio and video signals in one cable. I don't believe there is a significant difference that the average person could see or hear between the two.
Part of my home theatre equipment supports HDMI and part does not, so it all has component cables. The HD and home theatre looks and sounds great, so the only thing I could do is buy some more modern equipment that has the HDMI and change from four cables (Red, green, blue audio and an audio cable) to one (HDMI).
It ain't broke, so I'm not going to fix it...

If the converter box only supports up to 1080i, component will work fine. HDMI is needed for 1080p. The only thing really 1080p right now is the ps3 and blu ray. I saw some advertising for Dish Network's new system, which claims 1080p, but I do not know anything about that at this point.

The TV is 1080p capable but only have 1080i digital tv. Don't think is makes much difference to me...

Save some cash and use the component cables.

HDMI is the best connection style to use right now. Component is the next best thing and like previously mentioned, you won't really tell the difference unless you are one of "those" guys who has to have every single ounce of performance possible. (oh wait, that refers to about 99% of us on here...my bad!).

1080 p is progressive scan and 1080 i is interlaced scan......p is the current best but not EVERYTHING has caught up to that standard yet...

Maybe I'm just one of those guys but I hear AND see a difference between component and hdmi. monoprice.com has hdmi cables for pennies compared to other stores, never checked the site mentioned above. i like the ones rated for in-wall installation with the net jacket, nice and big, gold plated. Most people will notice only the sound being better because you can actually hear the difference between analog (component) and digital, unless you're already using SPDIF or Optical audio from the device.

I also heard if the equipment is far away from the TV, then go with HDMI cables. But if the equipment is under the TV, component cable will be fine.

I don't know how true this is.

Lenght would more than likely be a factor with the componets as Billy said! HDMI calbe are bascially computer cables IMO:smile:

Whether or not you can see a difference between either types of cables...

I like the fact that one HDMI cable can handle video/audio signals, instead of using several different cables. Makes for a neater and cleaner installation. That alone makes it worth it and I use them when possible.

I go to newegg.com for inexpensive HDMI cables.
