So i think my headgaskets blown... Car stumbles horribly at idle. Slightly misses under partial load. Smokes blue smoke when u get on it and cant even go WOT before horrifiying amounts of knock. (usaully 1-4, but at worst 8-10). Also on cold starts it leaves black marks on the pavement coming from the exhaust...

What do you guys think....

I have blown a few head gaskets never saw blue smoke just lots of steam out of the exhaust .

Turbo seal?

which seal should i check? Would this cause it to knock? What are some things or tricks i can play with to see whats wrong.

David

well if you wan to check turbo seal take mas air piping and see if blade moves from mass air to dp. check in up pipe for oil blowing thorugh.. that would cause misfiring boggin, loss of power

If the seal on the exhaust side of the turbo is leaking the car will not blue smoke on first start-up after a over night cool-down. It will start to smoke only after the turbo gets hot enough to start burning the oil off from the inside of the turbo. Usually takes a couple of minutes or about a mile of driving.

This is assuming you do not have leaking valve stem seals.

It will only smoke under hard acceleration and when it is pinging. I honestly cant tell what color the smoke is cause its only happened a few times and most of the time its at night and i have a rediculous tint on the rear. But i am almost positive its blue smoke and almost smells like burning oil. I just really want to get on it without blowing anything up. Does it ping that hard cause im only on 30# injectors? It performs perfect part and mid throttle acceleration and just cruising as well.

One thing is sure ..... If you burn oil, you will get knock. :D
The question is : "Where can oil come from?"

Did you look into the intake tract (intercooler) to see if it is wet with oil?
Did you verify your PCV is good?
Did you do a compression and leak-down test?

Looked into intercooler no oil in any of the exiting pipes. I did not check the up pipe. Looks like i'd have to take off the turbo to look??? I only have a compression tester and not a leak down but i will do that in the next few days. Also PCV is good...

David

Compression test may show you possible damage in the motor.
A blown HG will most likely not result in burning oil as stated by andy999.
I had a similar issue you are seeing but I had blown a piston, hence my "piston blown skewed advice" :D

Here is a dumb question.
When did this all start?

Thats not a stupid question!!! But its been like this the whole time ive owned the car, 1 month or so. It didnt always blow smoke and its only done it a few times, it seems to progressivly get weaker as time goes by...

David

Better stop driving it and start looking far the cause.
Trust me, I know ........................

Actually, I am not sure since I have a Hot Air.
Someone with an IC car can chime in. Sorry on this one. :(

I smell gas in my oil! Does that narrow it down the possibilities? Its goin through a bit of oil. Three quarts in one month!!!

David,
Sounds serious. Sounds like you may have multiple issues.
Are you leaking oil anywhere at all?
Do you know what chip and injectors you are running?

Gas in your oil could be stuck open injector(s), leaky injector(s) and/or the wrong chip. Using the amount of oil you are loosing could be a bad turbo seal or something mechanical in the engine.

Turbo issues.
Take the hose off on the compressor side of the turbo and see if there is any oil in the intercooler inlet. Should be dry. Also remove the downpipe and see if it is wet. Should be dry also.

Engine
Do a compression test and see what is going on.
Is there smoke or oil comming out of the breathers? If this is the case, you may have a pressurized block. I would suggest you park it, or it can get REAL expensive from here.

The rear main leaks a little, i am goin to do a deep search tommorow with a leak down test. I have 30# green stripes with a RED A chip. It runs rich as hell, can smell the gas... Fuel preasure is 42 with vaccum hose off.

I am pretty sure i dont have a leaky injector because the fuel system holds preasure for well over 20mins. I know this cause i have a FP gauge permenantly mounted to the hood.

Intercooler piping was clean i will check the exhaust side tommorow.

Even if i was burning oil and it was goin through the turbo how would that effect the clean air side of the turbo going into the motor giving me knock?

David

I just got to put the car on a lift and this is what i saw, oil all around Torque conevertor cover,i suspect its the rear main. Also Very little oil seemed to be coming from the right side top of the harmonic balancer. I dont know if it is the cam or crank sensors but i think its coming from a little cover with two bolts... Also there is oil under the intake manifold right under the runners on the left hand side of the motor(facing rear of car), its very little but enough to say theres somthing about to leak.

I dont have a PCV valve just a breather element which looks old and nasty, gonna replace that but i hardly think thats the problem.

Last there seems to be a penny size whole in my torque converter shield/bellhousing??? the lower section has a whole in which i can peak in and see the convertor. Dont know if this is bad? That portion does not contain fluid correct?

Leak down test to come....

David

If running a stock MAF, check your screen (s). I run the front screen only in mine. It came out once and the car ran horrible. Rough idle, and smoked under acceleration. It never knocked.

Good question. Through the EGR :)
