Head gaskets for 84/85 are different than 86/87 & i believe heads are also different. If i were to run champion heads on my hot air block which head gasket would i use? Also can i run the late heads on early hot air block with no problem? I am gonna start looking for some heads & i want to have this info before i buy something that may not work. I hope that someone can help me with this. Thanks in advance!

Heads are the same, 8445s. HGs... I cant remember to be honest. I run ported 8445s and felpro 1007 hg's, but those are lock wire. Maybe i am giving up some compression with a non-hot air hg, but dont remember now...

since the block is slightly taller on the non 109 units, they had the steel shim to seal the top end, while the 109s and lower deck blocks used a composite gasket. you can use either in either place.... only effect is a slight reduction or bump in compression.... really an amount that is hardly noticable.

I too run the 1007 fel pros on my 4.1s. love them, although many have had issues with them.

I did notice that the fel pro 1007 has 3 extra holes on the bottom. Do those just end up protruding out?

Yes they will stick out if your using a production block. Most would only suggest this for a stage 2 or in my case, thin bore production 4.1s where there isnt alot of meat left at the top of the block to seal aganst.

However the 1007's are not for the light hearted. They require a reciever groove in the head to work properly and this involves alot of time. many have issues with them because there are so many variables to get this gasket to seal correctly and its the checking and double checking to make sure the gasket centers in the groove when the head is fastened down. a small shift due to a block dowel pin mis-alignment will ruin the whole job. all of these variables have to be taken into account. Most would rather just use a cometic or a 9441 and get roughly the same sealing abilitys at a 1/3 of the work.

I'm glad u mentioned that the 1007's require receiver grooves, I would of put them straight on & had big problems

Honestly if you are worried about that point loss in compression, use the RJC Steel Shim Gasket system. works like a champ.

the compression does not worry me at all. I believe it is actually proven that lowering compression & stuffing more air & fuel makes more horsepower. I worry that i'll spit it out with more boost (actually detonation is supposed to be that culprit) but i do want a more forgiving head gasket. I've seen the sce titan gaskets that look bad a$$ but don't know anyone that has tried them.

Heads are the same on all production 83-87 Buick V6's casting number 8445. Head gaskets are different due to the lower dech height on the later models. The correct performance Fel-Pro gasket for non- oring heads is the Fel-Pro 1000.
